TV WEEK Nov 14-20, 2009

Quote:
Yvette Chegwidden finds that maturity doesn't come with age as Alan Fletcher and Stefan Dennis interview each other

When I sat down with Neighbours veterans Alan Fletcher and Stefan Dennis, who play Dr Karl Kennedy and Paul Robinson respectively, to record their interview together, the banter flowed - as you'd expect between two mates who've known each other since 1987. With the subject matter ranging from plastic surgery to Kylie, we've picked out the bits that were fit to print in a family-friendly publication!

Alan: Today is your birthday. Are we allowed to know how old you are?
Stefan: I'm older than you.

A: You're a bit hunkier than me and you look so good that you're considered to be a yummy daddy. Have you had any cosmetic assistance?
S: The most I've done is use eye cream.

A: You've recently been blessed with your third child, Darci, who's just 13 months old. How do you find having a baby at your advanced age?
S: I'm hoping to be a relatively young 70-year-old dad.
A: What, at her 21st?

A: You've been the baddie for so long now, but there was a time when Paul was good. Did you like that?
S: I hated it. It was nothing like playing evil Paul. The fans like Paul to be bad too. What do your fans say to you?
A: All my fans want to talk about is how Karl's had affairs. But they also say, "My mum loves you and I wish you were my father".

S: Was it Dr Karl who performed Paul's brain surgery?
A: No, he cut your leg off - and took enormous pleasure in doing so.

A: What's been your all-time favourite Neighbours storyline?
S: It was when Lassiter's developed concrete cancer and it was going to cost $100,000 to fix and for some reason, that was going to send Paul broke - a man who's supposedly a millionaire.

S: What was yours?
A: I loved the story about Karl's affair with Sarah Beaumont (Nicola Charles) - that lifted the Kennedys into new territory. When Susan (Jackie Woodburne) found out, Karl got that very famous slap. But I also love the lighter stories, such as the recent one where Karl was doing forensic analysis on dog poo to find out whose dog was messing up his lawn.

A: I notice that your mobile phone was made around the same time as Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone. What are you like with technology?
S: Well, I don't get Twitter, but then I don't get a lot of technology. I use email, but to me it's just like writing a letter - which I hate, because when I was at boarding school in Ballarat, every Saturday morning we were made to sit down for three hours and write letters. I hated it.

A: Do you read your fan mail?
S: My wife Gail actually does it for me. I sign all the letters I send back personally but she's the one who sorts through it all.

A: What made you leave the show in 1992?
S: I was stupid. I thought I was going to go to Hollywood and conquer the world, and I didn't. Fortunately, I worked constantly in the UK for the 12 years I was gone.

S: Is it true you were on The Love Boat with Morgan Fairchild?
A: Yes. One of the highlights of my career is being in bed under the sheets with Morgan Fairchild.

S: Are you still in touch with any past cast members?
A: Yes - Jesse Spencer (who played Billy Kennedy).
S: I'm still in touch with this girl who was on for a short stretch. She had curly hair and was tiny. What was her name? Oh, Kylie Minogue, that's right...
