PowerDVD does some after-processing to hide cap interlacing, so they look a little blurrier but better overall in my opinion. But it also seems to apply lower compression as it's images are bigger. So do you have some new hardware then or are you just trying something different?

copying recordings from pvr to usb then capping on pc . My puter runs out of puff capping through VLC so Powerdvd it will be . Had to upgrade though as my old version wouldn't play pvr recordings . Just using a trial version at the moment , having trouble finding a free one

This might help, Narly. Go to 'ExtraTorrent' and do a search on Powerdvd. I've done it and I know it's their. I'd put the link on, but I'm not sure whether it's against the board's rules/regs.
