I'd never even heard of this Scream of Shalka so had to do a 'net search & discovered that it was a cartoon. I'm presuming that the new production team are basing the new series continuity on what was established in the actual live-action TV series, as that's what most Dr Who viewers (like me) would have seen.

Imagine if Star Trek had to take all the events of Star Trek: The Animated Series into account when writing the feature films & all the follow-up series... Not gonna happen!

Maybe the Doctor has passed his 13th. Remember the brain of Morbius?

Apparently, the novelisation of Morbeus went into more detail about the images in the psychic arm wrestle, but of course, we know it was really just a convenient device used to pay a little homage to a few people & since then hasn't been considered to be anything more than that. :)

The Gallifrey Chronicles has explained our different 9th Doctors, and Scream of the Shalka was in "Doctor Who: The Legend" (1st edition), so Scream of the Shalka is part of continuity.

OK, 12 regenerations it is. I just asked cos I seem to remember a reference to "regeneration limit" (as it were) in the ep were DW5 (Pete Davison) meets the Brig and Turlough

Originally it was said that Gallifreyans could "live forever bar accidents", but in The Deadly Assassin, it was changed to 12 regenerations/13 lives. Each life usually lasts a Time Lord/Lady a millenia if they stay on Gallifrey and don't have any bad accidents, so Gallifreyans tend to live for about 13,000 years. The Doctor's had a lot of accidents and a lot of adventures, and he had just turned 1000 a few years before his seventh regeneration!

I am thinking, just out of interest's sake, to get a list of the now quite well known actors and noted personalities that have guest starred in DW. So far we have:

John Cleese
Gai Waterhouse
Michael Craig
Michael Gough
Geoffrey Palmer
Hale & Pace
Honor Blackman

I'm sure there are more. Feel free to add any names

The '80s were full of them. Here's a nice little list:

Beryl Reid
Ingrid Pitt (several times - both the 1970s and 1980s)
Lesley Dunlop (I'm sure she was in something famous)
Sarah Greene
Faith Brown
Kate O'Mara
Jacqueline Pearce
Alexei Sayle
Michael Gough
Michael Jayston (celebrity to an extent, I suppose)
Lynda Bellingham
Brian Blessed
Richard Briers
Ken Dodd
Don Henderson (he did something, didn't he?)
Brenda Bruce & Clive Swift (both were in Keeping Up Apperances as regulars)
Sheila Hancock
Delores Gray
Angela Bruce (later becoming the female version of Lister in Red Dwarf)
David Banks & Terry Molloy (celebrities of sorts, mainly because of Doctor Who anyway)

There are many more, but their names escape me at the moment.

Eleanor Bron and David Graham (the voice of Brains in Thunderbirds) were the same story.

She was still the unknown Gai Smith back then.

I did I quick browse through the guest lists on IMDB and these some other names of actors/personalities who were well known before they appeared in DW include:

Julian Glover (The Crusade)
Francis De Wolff (The Keys of Marinus, The Myth makers)
Derek Ware (various)
George Cross (The War Machines)
Bill Kerr (The Enemy of the World)
David Prowse (The Time Monster)
Tenniel Evans (Carnival of Monsters)
Carmen Silvera (Invasion of the Dinosaurs)
Hilary Minster (Genesis of the Daleks)
Guy Siner (Genesis of the Daleks)
Burt Kwouk (Four to Doomsday)
Richard Todd (Kinda)
Valentine Dyall (various as the Black Guardian)
Lynda Baron (Enlightenment)
Alexei Sayle (Revelation of the Daleks)
Joan Sims (Mysterious Planet)
Brian Blessed (Mindwarp)
Richard Briers (Paradise Towers)

George Sewell (Remembrance of the Daleks)
Peggy Mount (The Greatest Show in the Galaxy)
Jean Marsh (Battlefield - back in a different role)

Some who became famous after DW include Ray Barrett, Hywel Bennett, Peter Sallis, Tim Pigott-Smith and Martin Clunes.
