Progressive rock legend Keith Emerson dies

Keith Emerson, the co-founder and keyboardist of progressive rock group Emerson, Lake and Palmer, has died aged 71, according to his former band mates.

"We regret to announce that Keith Emerson died last night at his home in Santa Monica, Los Angeles," read a statement on the band's Facebook page.

Emerson was considered one of the top keyboard players of the prog rock era.

He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, Santa Monica police confirmed to the BBC.

His death was being investigated as a suicide.

A police spokesman said Emerson's body was found in the early hours of Friday morning by his girlfriend Mari Kawaguchi at their flat in the Californian city.

Former band mate Carl Palmer said: "I am deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my good friend and brother-in-music, Keith Emerson.

"Keith was a gentle soul whose love for music and passion for his performance as a keyboard player will remain unmatched for many years to come.

"I will always remember his warm smile, good sense of humour, compelling showmanship, and dedication to his musical craft."

Inspired by Jimi Hendrix's theatrics with the electric guitar, Emerson was famous for his showmanship and outlandish on-stage performance style.

"That part of the act was something that just felt natural to do; something that allowed me be more expressive," he told Counterculture magazine.

ELP achieved an international following and were particularly popular in Britain and Japan. Several of the group's albums, including Tarkus, Trilogy, and Brain Salad Surgery entered the top five on the British chart.

Tarkus, released in 1971, featured an opening track lasting more than 20 minutes, inspired by the fictional Tarkus character - a half-tank, half-armadillo creature that would appear on stage at gigs.

Before ELP, Emerson - who was born in Yorkshire in 1944 - was a member of The Nice, which formed in 1967 but disbanded three years later.

In later life he pursued a solo career and remained active in the music business. He was forced to call off a tour in 2010 due to an abnormal growth in his colon, but had a tour of Japan scheduled for next month.

His last concert took place in July 2015 at the Barbican in London, where he performed alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra in a tribute to Robert Moog, the inventor of the Moog synthesizer.

Radio and TV personality Bruce Mansfield dies aged 71

RADIO and television personality, Bruce Mansfield, has lost his battle with prostate cancer at the age of 71.

He was a TV newsreader for many years before he and long-time 3AW co-host Phil Brady dominated Melbourne’s airwaves after joining together for Nightline and Remember When in 1991.

Nightline co-host Phil Brady said he was mourning his great mate this morning.

“It’s come as a bit of a shock,” he said.

“I guess since September when he was diagnosed, we’ve been prepared for the worst.

“Although he struggled with the illness he came on air for quite some time while he was unwell.

“The last time we saw him in the studio was about 6 weeks ago.

“I was with him only a week ago. I was shocked to see how thin he’d become. There was some hair loss too but he was very chirpy. Thankfully, he was pain free until the end.

And even though they weren’t on air at the time, they still had their wonderful chemistry, Phil said.

3AW broadcaster Darren James worked with Mr Mansfield for more than 10 years and said he had fond memories of his colleague.

“Every show Bruce did was successful. He had a beautiful voice, he was a great presenter. He was passionate on every shift he worked,” Mr James said.

“He was a hard worker, very professional, he’d get to work early then we’d sit around after the show and mess around and laugh hysterically.”

Even though their breakfast radio laughs would often extend to the pub on a Friday evening after the show, Mr Mansfield was a devout family man.

“He was a family man with a lot of love for his wife Jill and his kids David, John and Louise,” Mr James said.

“One of the great broadcasters of Melbourne won’t be heard on the airwaves anymore.”

“The loyal listeners of Nightline will no doubt miss him terribly. It will be hard for them. He will be fondly missed.”

3AW Operations Manager Stephen Beers confirmed he’d spoken to Bruce’s wife Jill this morning.

“Jill contacted me this morning, saying he’d passed away peacefully at home,” he said.

“Bruce has been an enormous slice of 3AW’s history.

“He mentoree people through the business and through the industry. He could be a gruff character; he was one of the funniest but always generous.”

As for the continuation of the program, loyal listeners need not worry.

“I can assure you Nightline will continue with Phil Brady.”

As for Bruce’s replacement, former program producer of more than 20 years Simon Owens will continue to broadcast with Phil.

There will be a special edition of Remember When paying tribute to Bruce Mansfield tonight on 3AW Radio.

Doris Roberts dies at age 90

Doris Roberts, who played the nosy and overbearing mother to Ray Romano's character on the sitcom "Everybody Loves Raymond," has died, the show's former spokeswoman said Monday. She was 90.

The role earned her four Emmy awards, a Screen Actors Guild award and three Emmy nominations.

A veteran character actress, Roberts appeared in scores of TV shows and movies during her more than six decades in show business.

She had a recurring role on the 1980s TV series "Remington Steele" playing Mildred Krebs, the secretary to Pierce Brosnan's title character.

Roberts also won an Emmy for an appearance on the drama "St. Elsewhere" in 1983.

"God thank you for 90 years of Doris Roberts on this planet. You left us laughing!!! You left us better!! Travel well my beautiful friend," Tyler Perry, who directed Roberts in the 2012 movie "Madea's Witness Protection," wrote on Facebook.

"She made me laugh and I am forever in her debt," tweeted Norman Lear, the producer of "All in the Family." Roberts had a role on the show in 1976.

Roberts' acting career began in the early 1950s and she soon got TV roles in episodes of "Naked City," "Ben Casey" and "The Defenders."
After her film debut in 1961's "Something Wild," she appeared in more than three dozen movies. They included the original "The Taking of Pelham One Two Three" and "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation."

Roberts guest-starred on some of the most popular TV shows from the 1970s to the 1990s, including "Mary Tyler Moore," "Fantasy Island," "The Love Boat" and "Murder, She Wrote."

Love this song.
Quote:
Legendary soul singer Billy Paul died Sunday at his home in New Jersey ... according to his manager.

Paul -- most famous for his iconic song, "Me and Mrs. Jones" -- had checked into Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia last week as he battled cancer ... but his manager, Beverly Gay, says he was at home when he passed away.

Paul's signature hit went to number one for 3 weeks in 1972. The song also won him a Grammy.

His 1975 hit, "Let's Make a Baby" became controversial as Rev. Jesse Jackson called for radio stations to boycott the song due to its sexuality.

Paul's music made him a central figure in the black power movement, but chart-wise ... he never matched the success of 'Mrs. Jones.'

Billy was 81 years old.

Yep. 2016 officially sucks, where music greats are concerned.
