Good going girls... Quote: Samantha Stosur and Ashleigh Barty secure Fed Cup win for Australia
EXCITING tennis prodigy Ashleigh Barty made a brilliant Fed Cup singles debut as Australia defeated Switzerland to retain their place in the top-tier World Group.
After two days of frustrating rain delays, Australia needed less than four hours to win the World Group playoff as matches were played simultaneously on the competition's reserve day.
Rock-solid spearhead Samantha Stosur cast aside worries over her troublesome calf to score two singles victories while 16-year-old Barty triumphed on her Fed Cup singles debut to secure the 3-1 win.
The impressive win on clay in Chiasso ensures Alicia Molik's team will compete in the top eight for the second straight year.
After fighting so hard to return to the top tier last year, Australia were desperate to avoid relegation and captain Molik believes they can do some serious damage in 2014.
"This team is too good not to be in the World Group and I really believe we've got the team to beat the top nations in the world in tennis,'' Molik said.
"We deserve to be here."
Molik praised her players' professional approach despite the lengthy delays and justified a bold decision to name Barty for the reverse singles in place of Jarmila Gajdosova, who had lost her opening clash against top-ranked Swiss Romina Oprandi.
But Barty, who turns 17 on Wednesday, showed composure beyond her years in a classy 6-3 6-4 defeat of Swiss No.2 Stefanie Voegele, ranked 141 places higher at 56.
"We believed putting a fresh player in, even in Ash's first Fed Cup match, would definitely work in our favour," Molik said.
"It did and it proved she was ready.
"I think she's been ready for a while now and eager to get out and play."
Stosur led Australia superbly, securing two straight-sets wins as the rain-soaked tie was rushed along.
She wrapped up the tie with a 7-5 6-3 win over Oprandi after earlier crushing Voegele 6-0 6-4.
Her right calf was heavily strapped but there were no signs of the problem ahead of this week's WTA event in Stuttgart.
"I probably would have preferred not to have played two matches in one day considering I haven't played a competitive match for quite a while and given what's been going," Stosur said.
"But I'd have to say I was really pleased with the way I came out and played in both of them."
In unusual scenes, both opening singles contests started at the same time on separate courts as organisers desperately tried to complete the tie in one day.
Both allocated competition days were abandoned due to persistent rain in the southern Swiss city, a first in the competition's history.
The matches were played on humble side courts but there was nothing low-key about Stosur's first-set performance.
She punished Voegele with a powerful display, needing only 20 minutes to secure the set.
Voegele made her work harder in the second set, but Stosur fought from 3-0 down to secure a straight-sets win to put Australia on right track.
Gajdosova was beaten 6-2 6-3 by Oprandi.
