Please don't let this thread dissolve into a debate about Ads. I think we should stick to the topic. I agree with Macc's point about a review of active Mods, and whether more Mods are required. A Mod's availability changes over time, as real life always throws up new challenges. I still believe this change would make all Mod's lives easier.

IF this were to go ahead, how would the new mods be selected?
- Will the most suitable users as decided by the existing mods/admins be chosen; - Will becoming a mod be subject to a user expressing interest to an existing mod/admin; - Would a poll topic being established with a number of users as options, where users can vote on who they'd like to be new mods; or - Would it be a combination of some or all of the above?

Well, it's not a democracy. It's a privately owned enterprise owned & operated by (an) individual who, therefore, has the right to appoint whomever s/he likes - without being obliged to justify his/her decision to general members (who get to use the board for free).

Agreed. This place isn't a democracy and becoming a mod isn't a popularity contest. While the owner has the right to make anybody a mod for any reason, in theory it's whoever is best able to do the job.

We have noticed an unusual spike in number of spam posts in the last few weeks (we are the ones who clean them, after all).
There has been some debate between admins and mods about how to best deal with the issue. One of us is usually around once every few hours but going through the motions of banning spammers is slow and frustrating process. In addition to improving registration process to stop bots from registering, we are having to deal with human spammers in third world countries who just sit there, create accounts and spam the forums. After some deliberation, we have decided to start blocking known spam IP ranges to see if it makes any significant difference. This has been going on for about 10 days now and I would like to think that number of spam messages is decreasing.
I would in particular like to thank our admin mr_walker, who has been very active in blocking these IP ranges.
