...and you've probably hit the main culprit on the head Skaven, the meeja.

Seems to me the MSM are more running the agenda nowadays than governments are.

My feeling is that most Australians are not racist and will give everybody a fair go. However there is a minority of ignorant, bigoted, redneck, xenophobic bogans (i.e. fuckwits) who give the rest of us a bad name.

Exactly! I mean the whole "Are Australians Racist" debate is just a facile argument really isn't it? Perhaps if the question the media shoved down our throats was "Are There Any Racist People in Australia" then, yes, of course they are - some; just like there are in every other country in the world. And we're by no means one of the worst! But I guess if they worded it that way it wouldn't be an attention-grabbing-headline for tabloid press or trash-TV shows like ACA & TT to create polls & sensationalised stories all in the name of after-the-news crap TV for bogans...

Then, when people lose interest, we'll be overloaded with something else, & then something else after that, & again after that, until we've gone the full cycle & end up back with teenage alcoholism (then this) again...

the 'media' yes has largely owned this debate for their own purposes, but their is also something deeper than just blaming the media [other agendas-I'm not going to elaborate.

nevertheless the whole racist thing has long since had any real interest for me, its an argument that will always be in the realms of the childish and the intellectually underdeveloped. dont know why i bothered with this one. probably just a continual need to help others properly rationalise the debate  .

humphrey bear-"My Landlord is Greek, most of my next door neighbours are Greek. Many of my closest friends are Greek. For years, I worked in low paid jobs beside Indians, Vietnamese, Somalians, blah, blah, blah; you get the idea. On the whole, I think that our society is multi-cultural, accepting, and tolerant"

[and dumb]-I ask are the greeks very tolerant to the turks, also one of the most mysoginist races/cultures round.

also is there an equation here whereby our working rights and entitlements are being kept under lock and key thru this kind of racial rhetoric/emotional blackmail by business interests. Australians have been for two decades the most over-worked underpaid workers in the so-called first world [which is rapidly converting into the 3rd world].
Having worked as farm laborer/kitchenhand all my life much of it relies on cheap labor to serve meals to the rich, or help farmers become rich from the proceeds of cheap overseas labor just like america has become either rich or poor with an increasingly smaller middle class. sorry

and all these indians do you really think theyve just come here to study. might one of their reasons for coming here be to displace australians????

how would australians go if we decided to hold up in public spaces in india to protest indian provincialism or its attitudes toward foreigners? if youve ever been to india you can meet wuth some serious attitudes [how many australians have been murdered while holidaying in asia dozens and dozens]. its not all peace charm and happiness.

actually I dont mean to blow my own trumpet here but my essay great southern republic has juast been nominated for the nobel prize in literature. and if I win I will be only the second australian after patrick white to recieve such an honor. This article discusses the current australian cultural racial syndrome brilliantly.

I see racism as a character flaw in individuals, not as some group you belong to within a society. A nation is made up of individuals. Amongst these individuals there will be wildly varying opinions about any subject you can think of, particularly race, imigration, etc. As Skaven mentioned in an earlier post (Jan. 16), asking "Are Australians racist?" isn't the right way to put the question. It's like asking "Are dogs vicious?". We know that some are, but not all of them.

Racists are just individuals who have an irrational fear of people that are seemingly very differrent to them. They are ignorant to the fact that our list of differences is far shorter than that of our similarities. I've worked and socialised with Vietnamese, Lebanese, Italians, Greeks, Aboriginals, etc. Amongst them were some major arseholes and wankers. This does not mean that the entire ethnic group are arseholes and wankers, it just means that as an individual they have flaws in their character that make them that way for reasons other than race. I do not share the values or opinions of every other Caucasian. As such, I would object to being painted with the same brush that certain other Caucasians are painted with, because of what they say or do.

Greg - I don't believe for a minute about your Nobel nomination. You hardly know where to put capital letters or full-stops. Feel free to put your opinions forward, but please don't piss in our pockets and tell us it's raining.

Lost in Translation it all is. More so, lost in expression and getting to the point.

I have little racism, but it does grow sometimes I admit. but not individually. Only because the Gov't cries foul trying to keep the economy afloat during tough times, but the hypercritical retards did not pull back on immigration. I find it extremely difficult to accept anyone is allowed to migrate into any english speaking country who "clearly" cannot read a word of english. Eg: To have the option of an interpreter to sit for your driving test is a bloody joke in itself! How are they going to read the road signs? Lovely.

Equal Opportunity in Employment
You run a call centre or service many major blue chip customers. Would you select a candidate with a very thick non-english accent to risk pissing your customers off? I don't even have to think about that one. Nope!

Right on the money there. I looked at his post and laughed a few days ago at his lack of prose and illiteracy. Yes there might be an Editor/Publisher for writers, but if he/she is illiterate - there is no hope.
