For me it is time for some big changes again. Yes we were 1 game from the GF but we need more to get us past Salary Cap breaking teams in the Tigers/Kings/Bullets.

I would let go of Fisher. Look at him in timeouts, no motivation at all. Ums and ahs alot not really inspring the team. Maybe good off the game night court but we need more.

I would hire Connor Henry as Head Coach. Whether or not he came as a package with Fisher, he looks more inspring and would be ideal as our coach.

Players to release: Homik, Shipp, Hunt.
Players to keep/ re sign: Rogers, Redhage, PC, Loughton, Dowdell, Garlepp.

Iffy signings: Brown, Caporn.

We need more big depth the help in the C. Garlepp in co where deserving of anymore minutes. Loughton needs help with Rogers really struggling.

I would look to a better quicker option than Brown. Draper would fit that mould but he looks like he is aligned to the Kings.

Man it will be an interesting off season at Cat land.

Interesting that you take a shot at the Tigers, Kings and Bullets for salary cap breaches considering it was your guys who cheated earlier in the season, as the article above your last post states.

No we havent blatantly cheated the cap/points like the other 3.

Where the cats went wrong was in 2 away games where we had a development player listed in the away games which meant we had 11 players listed instead of 10. Mike Homik was the 11th player who played those night for an average of 2 minutes over those 2 games for 0 pts, 0 asts, 0 rebs etc etc.

Hence why we accpeted the fine as it was an oversight by team management for those games.

The other 3 teams have bought the teams and are way over the cap (oops sorry under the cap but under the table payments) and have been like that for the full season hence my comments.

Fisher returns home to US
Thursday, March 06, 2008

PERTH, Australia (6 Mar 2008) – The Perth Wildcats Head Coach Scott Fisher has advised the club that he will be relocating permanently to the US with his wife and family and will not seek a contract renewal.

The Wildcats will commence a world-wide search for a replacement immediately following its seasonal review.

“We obviously respect this personal decision and Scott leaves us on good terms with a lot of good memories” Managing Director Andrew Vlahov said today. “I have had great respect for Scott as a team mate and have enjoyed watching his evolution as a top NBL coach. I wish him all the best with the next phase of his life.”

Henry gets 'Cats nod
Friday, May 16, 2008

Sometimes, the thing you really need is right under your nose.

That's the logic the Perth Wildcats have used in appointing Scott Fisher's former assistant, Conner Henry, as the team's head coach for the next two seasons.

There were plenty of rumours about potential candidates for the job Fisher vacated following the 2007/08 season. Supposedly Brian Goorjian was a target before signing with the South Dragons. Recently fired Milwaukee Bucks head coach Larry Krystkowiak was also mentioned, as was perennial candidate Cal Bruton, whose name inevitably pops up like something out of a Whack-a-Mole game whenever there is an NBL coaching position to be filled.

Yet on Friday the Wildcats made what, on the surface at least, might seem like the uninspired move of giving Henry the nod.

The more cynical 'Cats fans are probably already writing Henry's coaching obituary because he has no NBL head coaching experience. Others might be bemoaning the fact that the Wildcats took so long to appoint someone who was right in front of them the whole time, indicating he was the fall-back candidate.

But the proof of the pudding is in the eating (or in this case, the win-loss column). Henry can't be fairly judged as a coach until he has the chance to put his team on the floor and institute his systems. After all, Al Westover was considered by many as a career assistant until he finally got the chance to lead the Tigers, and he turned out alright.

The fact that the Wildcats took what, to many impatient fans, seemed an inordinately long time to confirm Henry is nothing more than an indication they did their due diligence in filling what is the most important position in their organisation.

It was incumbent upon Wildcats bigwigs Andrew Vlahov and Nick Marvin to explore all the possible options before confirming their preferred candidate. If anything, it is a sign that they did their homework by not jumping to elevate their assistant to the head role as soon as Fisher announced his intention to return to the US.

Henry has a number of advantages over bringing in someone new. He knows the Wildcats personnel inside out and has clearly earned the respect of his players. Familiarity might breed contempt, but it shouldn't stop you from valuing what you have.

Henry also served an invaluable two-year apprenticeship under Fisher which means he has a solid understanding of the league. He was integral in the institution of the Wildcats defensive system that saw them reach the Semi Finals last season. Perhaps most importantly though, he is a passionate teacher who communicates that passion clearly to all those around him.

There is also the fact that he has a wealth of NBA experience to fall back on, having played at the Houston Rockets, Boston Celtics, Milwaukee Bucks and Sacramento Kings during his career.

The Wildcats are clearly expected to be a contender again this season, with their solid core of Paul Rogers, Shawn Redhage, Peter Crawford, Brad Robbins and Alex Loughton all returning. A top four finish is not an unreasonable expectation if he can keep his star players healthy.

Rather than bring in someone who might want to blow-up the team and start again, the Wildcats went with someone who has intimate knowledge of their roster and where they fell short last season in the Finals.

It might not be sexy, but that sounds like a solid business decision to me.

He is a great pickup. A number of teams were after him.

'Cats sign US point guard until 2011
Wednesday, May 28, 2008

The Perth Wildcats today announced the signing of US point guard Darnell Hinson for three years.

Following a successful first year in the NBL with West Sydney Razorbacks, Hinson was the number one draft pick for the Puerto Rico BSN league where he was also named Rookie of the Year.

"Hinson was one of the highest scoring point guards in the league last year averaging 20 points a game," CEO Nick Marvin said. "Signing a proven performer until 2011 finally gives our club true stability in that critical point-guard role," he said. "Together with Brad Robbins who is also signed for three years, we now have reliable floor-generals that we believe will give us that edge in our championship quest."

Speaking from Oklahoma today, 28-year-old Hinson said he was glad to sign with the Wildcats. "I really enjoyed my first year in the Australian league and was excited to sign with Perth for a three-year deal. When you look at the Wildcats with their success last year and the fact that almost all the players are still together - you know you have a real championship team," he said.

"They have stability and can build and improve. I am looking forward to doing the best and being the best player I can be. For the first time in my playing career, I'm not the sole scorer - Perth has a great team of scorers and I'd love to be a part of that," he said.

Wildcats Weigh in

Wed, 25 Jun 2008 3:22 PM

The Perth Wildcats have announced the signing of Stephen Weigh for the next three years.

With numerous NBL clubs expressing strong interest in the 21-year-old star guard on his return from the US, the Wildcats are excited to have been successful in gaining his services until 2011.

Weigh averaged 19 points and five rebounds a game during his two years at the Australian Institute of Sport. He spent the following two years at the University of Utah where played alongside WA centre Luke Nevill.

Weigh was named MVP of the Australian Under-20 National Tournament in 2005. He was also the top scorer at the FIBA International tournament in July 2005 averaging 18 points five rebounds per game.

Weigh scored 26 points against Team USA (made up of CBA players and overseas professionals) and was named MVP of the Adidas Asia Superstar Camp in 2005.

“Obviously we are very excited about securing a key player on a long-term contract for the club,” CEO Nick Marvin said. “Weigh will give us athleticism and perimeter shooting in a tall guard. He’s very similar to Conner Henry and I believe he can learn a lot from the ex-NBA legend."

The Wildcats also announced on Wednesday the appointment of Mick Downer as Assistant Coach for the next two seasons.

Downer is currently the Head Coach of Basketball WA’s High Performance Programs and brings with him over 10 years of experience in providing intensive coaching and training at all levels.

Previous coaching positions for Mick Downer included Head Coach of Basketball Australia National Junior programs in both Queensland and WA and Head Coach Under-20 Queensland Men.

“Mick is an important addition, not just for the upcoming season but the long-term development of club,” Marvin said. “We will see a greater focus on individual player coaching within the club as well as a focus on developing and improving juniors and up-and-coming basketball talent in this state. We are clearly committed to a greater engagement with basketball in Western Australia and Mick is an important acquisition for this program.”

The appointment was backed by Basketball WA.

“We are very disappointed to lose Mick who has made an outstanding contribution to the development of the sport during his time with Basketball WA," Basketball WA CEO Rick Smith said. "We are excited however about working with Mick and the Perth Wildcats to develop a strong strategic alliance that provides talented athletes with opportunities to excel at the highest level.”

'Cats pounce on Ben Knight

The Perth Wildcats have reached terms with ex-captain of the Singapore Slingers, Ben Knight, and is awaiting NBL approval for the 2008/09 season.

32-year-old Knight is a proven performer having won a championship with the Sydney Kings in 2005. The 202cm forward was in the Athens Olympic squad and was captain of the Slingers for the last two years.

Knight averaged 12 points and seven rebounds per game and has shot 52% from the field over his career

“Knight is the last piece of the puzzle,” CEO Nick Marvin said. “He’s going to bring experience and toughness that will help us throughout the season but will be critical during our play-offs.”

“I think fans will be truly impressed with our off-season recruitment. Our campaign for a record fifth championship just got a lot more lethal,” he said.

After a really bad last few games the cats have won against the Melbourne Cheater.....oops Tigers. We hadnt won at the Cage since 2005 so with an injury depleted team against a stacked Tigers team it was a fantastic win.

We certainly miss the big guy in the paint.

Wildcats resigned to being without Rogers
ABC - December 3, 2008, 3:27 pm

Perth Wildcats forward Alex Loughton says the team needs to be prepared to play most of the NBL season without captain Paul Rogers.

Rogers is yet to play a game this campaign because of a leg injury, but coach Conner Henry is hopeful he will return to the court next month.

Loughton says the Wildcats' forwards need to work hard to overcome the captain's absence.

"We've just got to be moving forward with the group that we've got," he said.

"I don't think we can rely on any certain date for him to get back.

"I'm not sure what his recovery schedule is like, I heard it's going well but I'm not sure, and I've just got to assume that this is the team we've got right now."

The Wildcats are in fourth position on the ladder and have lost five of their six games against the top three, including last week's defeats to New Zealand and Melbourne.

Henry says Perth's championship hopes rest on its ability to beat the best teams.

"We have not shown well against the top three teams," he said.

"If we want to make any splash at the end of the season we've got to get to that fourth spot, remain there, put pressure on those top three, and then play-offs is a whole different time of year."
