Bird in the firing line

4 April 2004

Cronulla coach Stu Raper will address his players over their on-field attitude tomorrow following their undisciplined performance against South Sydney, which culminated in the sending off of young five-eighth Greg Bird.

Bird was dismissed in the 66th minute of last night's 36-12 loss to the Rabbitohs at Aussie Stadium for kneeing Shane Marteene in the head - an out-of-character act but one which was labelled ridiculous by chief executive Steve Rogers today.

Bird is expected to be charged by match review commissioner Greg McCallum tomorrow and, as well as a significant stint on the sidelines, could face disciplinary action from the club.

Cronulla chief executive Steve Rogers confirmed the Sharks had the ability to fine Bird over his actions, which sparked outrage at the time and threw the spotlight on the club's on-field discipline.

Rogers also conceded Raper was concerned about his side's discipline.

"I have no doubt we will talk about it tomorrow," Rogers said.
Rogers was dumbfounded by Bird's outburst because the former Australian schoolboys captain is not renowned as a dirty player.

"It was just ridiculous," Rogers said.

"I don't know any other words for it."

Rogers also revealed the club had the capacity to fine Bird, although he indicated that was unlikely to happen.

"Every club has the facility to do that," he said.

"It's not like he's regularly getting suspended and sent off."

What do you guys think is a suitable punishment for bird brain??

what did Luke O'Donnell get for his late/off the ball tackle last year (or was it the year before)? 8 - 10 weeks I think, and that would be about right for Bird

I'd say anything above 6 weeks at least....even if it was out of character for him they still have to make an example out of it....

I say suspend him without pay for 6 weeks, that should hurt. He's young and if it is not the way he usually plays then I suppose that's fair . If a player is suspended how much pay cut do they have to take? Or is that up to the individual club?

I think I would be happy with 10-12. Cronulla is a poorly run club but should take further money off him. He would lose out on his match fees but that's pretty much it. If I was a CEO and a player did that I would tear up his contract and make him play for the eels
