The Countdown to the Americas Cup is beomming serious now ..

A SOBERING THOUGHT
It is a sobering thought for the 11 pretenders to Alinghi's America's
Cup that even with a string of bad starts from helmsman Ed Baird and
even using the slower of the team's two boats, the Swiss defenders still
walloped the opposition in the seven-race Act 13, which concluded at
Valencia on Saturday. Now Alinghi has two months of splendid isolation
to iron out helmsman issues and develop even more speed while the 11
challengers try and eliminate each other through four rounds of
selection trials.

Ed Baird, given the nod over fellow American Peter Holmberg, admitted to
his shortcomings in five starts out of seven. "I didn't start very well
this week, but fortunately the finish is where you get your points," he
admitted. Perversely, precisely because of Baird's starts, SUI 91's
recoveries were aided by clear air. Yet most of the gains came from
speed, crafty positioning by skipper Brad Butterworth and polished crew
work. -- By Tim Jeffery, The Telegraph, full story:

L'HYDROPTERE HAS EXCEEDED THE 45 KNOT BARRIER

Faster, Higher, Further...Samedi 20 janvier 2007

Today, l’Hydroptère reached the record speed of 46.5 knots and, according to our measurement system, she beat the 500 meter distance record in her category as well as the absolute record for the nautical mile.

After a few training sessions spent on the adjustment of the boat, l'Hydroptère has now entered a new phase of "Performance" from the beginning of January.
The crew is now increasing the number of training sessions to define the best conditions and boat configuration to enable her to reach her first objective.

The first two records Alain Thébault and his crew would like to beat is the 500 meter record, held by Techniques Avancées with 42.12 knots and the Nautical mile record, held by Finian Maynard with 39.97 knots.

Today, during a training session, our measuring system recorded a run at 43.05 knots on 500 meters and 41.74 on one nautical mile which prove the reliability and potential of l'Hydroptère in the 5th version.

The completed improvements on the structure over the last nine months in the shipyard, plus the optimizations carried out since her launch, have made it possible to have a prototype technologically accomplished, with an incredible speed potential.

The speed peak recorded at 46.5 knots proves that the boat and her crew are ready to take up the challenge as soon as possible i.e. the absolute sailing speed record set at 48.7 knots on 500 meters.

Everything is being done to accelerate the certification of the speed reached before Port Haliguen, in Quiberon Bay, in order to make those first speed breaking records official for l’Hydroptère.

NEW SPEED RECORD

* The World Sailing Speed Record (WSSR) Council announced the ratification
of a new world record by Francis Joyon (FRA) onboard the 98-foot trimaran
"IDEC". Joyon blistered the singlehanded Cross Channel Record from Cowes to
Dinard on Sunday August 18th, averaging 21.6 knots along the 138-mile
course. His time of 6 hours, 23 minutes, and 36 seconds beat the previous
record set in July 2006 by Thomas Coville (FRA) and his 60-foot trimaran
“Sodebo" by 1:52:11. -- John Reed, Secretary to the WSSR Council

TP 52 Action
* Portimao, Algarve, Portugal (August 22, 2007) -- A fifth from a tricky
first race followed by their third victory from five starts ensures that
Peter de Ridder and his Valle Romano Mean Machine crew extend their overall
lead at the Breitling MedCup TP52's Circuit's Portugal Trophy off Portimao
to ten points. The series' fourth race started after a long wait for a sea
breeze to develop, with race tactics balancing the benefit of more breeze on
the left side of the course against the favoured wind shift to the right.
These conflicting breezes delayed the fifth race, which finally started at
1720hrs with conditions similar to Tuesday’s brisk NW'ly. -- Daily report:

AMERICA`S CUP NEWS :- (Battle of the Mouthpieces )

SUPREME COURT GRANTS ORDER
New York, NY (August 22, 2007) – The Supreme Court of the State of New York
today granted an order sought by the Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) requiring
the Société Nautique de Genève (SNG) to promptly answer a request to speed
up the legal process for resolving its proposed new rules for defending the
next America’s Cup. The San Francisco club sought the Court ruling alleging
SNG is in serious breach of its fiduciary duty under the Deed of Gift that
governs the Cup. It says SNG has accepted an invalid challenge from a sham
yacht club, and is seeking to impose an unprecedented one-sided set of rules
that hugely favor the defender to the detriment of all other competitors.

“We are very pleased with this ruling by the Court, because we believe the
Cup will be irrevocably damaged if we don’t get SNG’s Protocol changed,” Tom
Ehman, Head of External Affairs for BMW ORACLE Racing, the US club’s team,
said. “The new Protocol would give SNG’s team, Alinghi, radical new powers
to control nearly all aspects of the event that are still unsupported by any
explanation from SNG as to why they are needed,” he said.

Ehman said the syndicate whose challenge had been accepted by SNG, the Club
Náutico Español de Vela (CNEV), was a shell organisation that had been
formed only days prior to issuing a challenge and did not comply with the
terms specified by the Deed of Gift. “We would still prefer to negotiate a
solution outside the court, but we see SNG as violating its responsibilities
as Trustee, and we are fully prepared to go the legal distance if needed to
stop the America’s Cup being subverted into a hopelessly one-sided event,”
he said. -- Read on: http://www.sailingscuttlebutt.com/news/07/0822

AMERICAS CUP

HANDBAGS AT DAWN
(August 23, 2007) An undignified response from America’s Cup Management
(ACM) today, after the Golden Gate Yacht Club's shot across their bows on
Wednesday. Sometimes it really is better to say nothing. Here's one to start
with. Michel Bonnefous (ACM President) claims the protocol is not "an
attempt to control everything", although we've been offered no evidence to
the contrary.

Interesting that there is no mention of the yacht club of convenience, Club
Náutico Español de Vela (CNEV), in ACM's response, despite the CNEV's
questionable status as a bone fide yacht club being one of the central
tenets of the Americans' objections. You would have thought ACM might have
taken this opportunity to leap to the Challenger of Record's defence.
Because they're going to have to do that when they go to the New York
Supreme Court. I hope BMW Oracle's lawyers have forgotten about that
Optimist regatta from a couple of months back. Very embarrassing.

Also, an intriguing choice of words by Brad Butterworth in his concluding
sentence, suggesting that BMW Oracle's "underhand tactics... shows
disregards for all the legitimate competitors." Legitimate competitors.
Hmmmm... Does this mean ACM will be invoking Clause 4.4 of the Protocol?
"Acceptance of Challenging Competitors: ACM may, at its sole and entire
discretion, accept or reject any entry received."

This is all getting very nasty. Can someone - maybe Peter Reggio, now that
he's completed his tour of duty in Qingdao - organise a game of Rock, Paper,
Scissors (sponsored by Louis Vuitton, for old time's sake) between Larry and
Ernesto? It would save an awful lot of lawyers' fees, not to mention the
dirty laundry that will be aired in public once this case hits New York. --
SailJuice, read on for the ACM response in full:
