CHANNEL 7 news reporter Talitha Cummins has made a startling confession about her battle with alcohol and is now four months sober after a quit program.

The former Brisbane-based reporter who moved south in February last year - Cummins made her debut reading the 6pm news bulletin on Saturday - said she has gone public with her battle with the booze in the hope it inspires others to address drinking issues.

Cummins told Confidential yesterday that she signed up for the online quit blog HelloSundayMorning.org in October after she found that years of social drinking had turned "really, embarrassingly ugly".

It followed a written confession posted on her Facebook page in which Cummins detailed the extent of her drinking, admitting she got "black out drunk" up to five nights a week.

"I was a big drinker. Anyone who knows me, knows that. I drank to celebrate, I drank to commiserate, I drank because I had a busy day, a boring day, a holiday. For years, drinking was my hobby.

"But in the last four years it turned ugly. The first sip unleashed an unstoppable need for more and more.

"A binge could end six hours later, or it could end two days later. After every one, I was left with incredible feelings of self-hatred, guilt and riddled with anxiety.

"I experienced blackouts every time I drank. I did things I'm not proud of. And probably things I'll never know I did - because I simply can't remember."

In the four months since ditching the booze, Cummins said her life had gone from "train wreck to terrific".

"My confidence is returning and my health is good. I can run 10km easily. I'm training for marathons."

And since going public at the weekend, 35-year-old Cummins said she had been inundated with comments from friends as well as work colleagues who have confessed to being in a similar situation.

"The response has been incredible. I've had a lot of emails and private messages also from people trapped in the drinking cycle.

"Quite a few people inside and outside of the media have now signed up to do (HelloSundayMorning.org)."

Asked if she thought she could ever return to being a controlled drinker, Cummins said it was unlikely.
