Jpeg please. A nearly 1Mb image for little quality improvement is not worth the bandwidth no matter how much you have.
PNG head crop 380kb. Medium quality JPG head crop 39kb.
Not much discernible difference. Even a high quality jpeg will yield a better file size than a 24 bit PNG. PNG have their place but not for caps.
