SHE covered it well behind that big weathergirl smile and sunny disposition, but Channel 7 news presenter Sara Groen has recently endured a potentially life-threatening operation, somehow managing to return to work just two weeks after a serious health scare.

Following confirmation this week that the striking brunette had ended her relationship with Seven political reporter Alex Hart comes word Groen developed a abdominal cyst three months ago and was rushed into emergency surgery.

Confidential understands she lost three litres of blood in the process and that doctors gave Groen three months off to recover - but she was back on air within a fortnight.

"She did take about two weeks off towards the end of February," a Seven spokeswoman confirmed yesterday.

"She was very unwell but its not something she wants to go into detail about - it's very personal."

Talking about the split this week, Groen cited distance as the reason for her break-up with Hart, who is based in Canberra, and hinted at her recent condition.

"It's been a really tough year," she told Confidential.

"Alex is an amazing guy- we're in touch and we still see each other because of work."

However a source close to the newsbreak reader said the operation was a major factor in splitting from Hart after about five months together.

"She just needed to focus more on herself," the source said.
