 TV Alert thread
Message Author

Postby HumphreyBBear » Sun Nov 29, 2009 4:27 pm

May I suggest that a "TV alert" forum might be a good idea.

I am sure that there are members that have missed out on watching/recording shows because they didn't realise they were being broadcast.

For example:

"Band Of Brothers", which I thought was a good series, is being repeated in full starting tonight at 10:30 on channel 7.
"Stargate Universe", a new series of the successful "Stargate" franchise starts tomorrow night on channel 10.

If we have a common thread where we could post notifications of upcoming shows, fewer members would miss out on such events.
Provided posts were restricted, essentially, to "notifications" rather than commentary, or opinions, then, I think members would benefit.

Just a thought.

Interesting idea, but I'm not sure this can produce enough posts to create it's own forum... sounds rather like a sticky thread to me. Or we could possibly directly add some sort of table to the forum's main page with TV schedule - if aussie TVs provide it online via XML or somehow (most TVs here in CZ do, so I suppose it should be available).

EDIT : added to TODO

See! I didn't know that!

Thanks Narly.

..and thanks CZ for considering the idea, you must have a lot on your plate already.

Yes, a sticky thread is exactly what I mean (I shouldn't have said "forum").

There are some third party sites that have RSS and XML TV schedules, but they are very unreliable.
I was only thinking of a centralised thread where people could post notifications of shows "of interest" that are appearing soon on TV, nothing as sophisticated as your idea.
That sounds like far too much work!

TV Guide can be had in XML format but it's always been a bit of a sensitive topic with the Australian TV networks - some have even sued (and lost - IceTV versus Channel Nine).

How would you see this working? This is a big country with many timezones, plus country areas, each with a different TV schedule.

I feel it is not needed. Kudos for the idea but I think not up to this site to remind people about TV shows coming up. So many channels now (including Foxtel) so sounds like a huge task to get anything working that is worthwhile of getting up and running.

Sticky is the way to go . We just need something like :- Hey people Newstopia is being repeated around 1.00am on sbs sunday mornings . I don't think we need to clutter the site with schedules , we can look at them online anyway . It's just that someone may see something that others have missed . Those off us that work between say 5am till 5pm often glance over whats on late at night or during the day . Award shows such as the ARIAS ( for example )can sometimes be repeated on a saturday or sunday arvo and can easily be missed .

Edit : - Heartbeat on Seven 2 Mondays at 7'30pm
