Big-budget Mako Mermaids for TEN

Mako Mermaids, a big-budget spin-off from kids series H20: Just Add Water, is set to air on TEN.

Filming on the $12.3 million series began on the Gold Coast yesterday.

Mako Mermaids centres on three mermaids, Sirena, Nixie and Lyla, ‘who are charged with the task of protecting their magical Mako Island from trespassers, only to be thwarted by the arrival of a 16 year-old land-dweller Zac – who forms a special connection with theisland and is granted a fish-like tail and amazing powers. Threatened by his existence, the mermaid pod are forced to move away, abandoning Sirena, Nixie and Lyla, who in a bid for survival must get legs, venture onto land, and take back Zac’s powers – or risk being outcasts forever.’

In the lead roles are Lucy Fry (Lightning Point, Reef Doctors), Ivy Latimer (Me & My Monsters, All Saints, Home & Away, Love My Way) and newcomer Amy Ruffle. Chai Romruen plays merman, Zac.

The 26 half-hour series from prolific producer Jonathan M. Shiff is directed by Evan Clarry and Grant Brown. Filming began just days after Reef Doctors, another JMS production, wrapped

Raw Comedy

Showcasing some of Australia's brightest, untapped comedic talent, Raw Comedy National Grand Final 2012 screens on Saturday May 26 at 9.30pm.

Comedian Dave Thornton (a regular on 7pm Project, Talkin' About Your Generation, Good News Week, Bed Of Roses) hosts as twelve of Australia's best new comedians take to the main stage of the Melbourne Town Hall at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.

Raw Comedy is the nation's biggest, most popular open-mic comedy competition and has been a launchpad for Australian comedy careers since its inception in 1996. The last chicken standing receives a trip to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and a spot in the prestigious "So You Think You're Funny' competition.

A staggering 1,078 comedians entered this year's competition, but after more than 60 gigs in capital cities and regional centres around Australia, this number was whittled down to the 12 finalists who had five minutes to perform to a sold-out house at the Melbourne Town Hall on Sunday 15 April. The Raw Comedy Grand Final represents a very healthy snapshot of newcomers to the stand-up comedy world.
