Emily Browning in 'Sleeping Beauty'



Emily Browning stars in a new adaptation of 'Sleeping Beauty', a whismical fairytale about a girl in a deep sleep waiting for true love's kiss. Just kidding, you guys. This is the twenty-first century, fairy tales are dead. The film, written and helmed by Julia Leigh, is a psychosexual creepfest about high-end prostitutes. Browning plays the titular beauty, a university student who takes a job as a prostitute specializing in men who require a completely comatose partner. Browning knocks herself out with drugs prior to each sexual encounter, and wakes up with no memory of the event.

Things get interesting when Browning becomes obsessed with knowing what goes on while she is unconscious. The film is the first cinematic effort from novelist Leigh, and the trailer boasts some very unsettling, Kubrickian visuals. The film is an official selection for the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Browning meditated during shocking Sleeping Beauty scenes

Former child star EMILY BROWNING forced herself to meditate during shocking scenes in the upcoming adult adaption of SLEEPING BEAUTY in a bid to shut out the horror.

The Aussie star plays the dozing princess in a new indie re-telling of the traditional fairytale, which is aimed firmly at the adult market.

Browning reveals her character is left naked and sedated with several older men in some disturbing scenes - and she had to close off her mind to make sure she wasn't left scarred by the experience.

Promoting the film at the Cannes Film Festival, the Sucker Punch star says, "I didn't become as disturbed during those scenes in the sleeping chamber as you might imagine, because I kind of taught myself to meditate through those scenes.

"I wasn't present in those scenes at all, so they didn't really have as much of an effect on me as I thought they might have."

The 22 year old, who made it big as a teen opposite Jim Carrey in Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events, admits her Sleeping Beauty will shock many film fans.

She adds, "She (character) falls into this bizarre area of prostitution, where she is willingly drugged. It's very, very heavy."

And she had to call on her meditation skills to block out fear and nerves before her nude scenes in the film: "I remember I was nervous before the first nude scene, and then as soon as the camera's on, you're in another place - it's not scary."

Emily Browning Comfortable With Nudity

Emily Browning has revealed that she is comfortable with nudity in her work.

The actress is in Cannes promoting new film Sleeping Beauty - the directorial debut feature for Julia Leigh.

And while the movie requires the actress to strip several times she admits that she is more comfortable baring all in her work than in her day to day life.

Speaking at the press conference for the movie at Cannes Film Festival Browning said: "In my everyday life I'm a little bit nervous and not particularly brave. I feel like if I can be completely brave in my work then I'm doing something right.

"I just loved the material and I could tell from the beginning that Julia wasn't going to do anything gratuitous - it was all tasteful.

"Also, I just don't have a problem with naked human bodies - it just didn't really seem much of an issue to me."

Browning grabbed everyone's attention earlier this year when she starred as Baby Doll in Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch.
