I stopped watching a longtime ago, but i still read what's going to happen during the next week in the weekend tv mag, and every week it's the same old carp with a characters life in danger, someone ending up in hospital, someone being stalked, violence, threats of violence etc, and almost everytime i catch the odd minute here and there i always seem to see someone crying.
Miserable and boring beyond belief!

I think that's what you get if you have to fill a daily show of 25 minutes with what happens in the life of X actors. If they would want to make a soap of my life, I doubt they chew out half a minute a day of worthwhile seeing stuff from me, haha. That's why long running shows often appear like that to also longterm viewers. I mostly watched these shows just for the girls in it, was never interested in the stories, of course I got also some general story knowledge by doing that.
I think what Home And Away and Neighbours lack most is humor. Real life has far more humor than the acted lives there. It's just way too serious, and that is what makes it boring/miserable/etc, so you're right in that aspect. It became an almost mechanic acting performance with the entertainment level of a robot.

But in the 'good old days' both shows had the right balance of humour in amongst the more 'serious' scenes/stroylines.

I remember during the Shane/Angel era of Home and Away, when Jack was trying to 'woo' Angel away from Shane.
One night he climbed through what he thought was Angel's bedroom window and got into the bed to cuddle he, only to find out that he had climbed into the wrong room and was cuddling up witn Fisher.
Silly, nonsense for sure! But for 6pm whilst i'm eating my dinner, it brought a smile to my face and made me laugh, and that's what i want at that time of day. Furthermore, when the shows don't take themselves too seriously, you can forgive and overlook the rather poor acting on show much of the time. When you have poor actors trying to do serious stuff, then it becomes cringeworthy and embarrassing.

You used to have people write in to TV week and the newspapers congratulating one of the soaps for their 'realistic' portrayal of a particular issue. I never knew whether to laugh or cringe, honestly.

It was only the girls and the comic relief that kept me watching. I do think that Home and Away ran out of the latter before Neighbours did, however, Colleen notwithstanding.

Was it with the change to a PG rating that the show became crap? I think Summer Bay must have the highest crime rate per population.
