 Temporary shutdown
Message Author

We regularly get DMCA shutdown notices from copyright police (read US lawyers) about images uploaded here (mostly H & A starlets trying to make it in Hollywood). Normally they arrive via email and we delete them as they are reported. However, they've now stepped it up and have started contacting our hosting provider instead. They in turn attempted to alert us but we never got those emails for some reason, so they shut the server down until we acted on these notices. So this resulted in server being unavailable for a few hours this morning.

I will look into why those notices never arrived from the hosting company, otherwise may have to move hosting to Russia , the bastion of democracy and free speech. Don't be surprised if certain images disappear from the site from time to time, they are usually not the most recent ones.

The notices are usually from lawyers representing paparazzi rather than celebrities themselves. And they actually want money - something stupid like $500 per image, which is pathetic as some of the images are quite small.

We got shut down again for about 6 hours. Whatever I did to try and fix the email delivery problem obviously didn't work. I will have to look into it again. Apologies to all.

The internet is in the public domain, if they want credit for photos posted online, they should watermark them.
Controls for a site such as AusCelebs is then simply a "no watermarked images" policy. Or give them the credit for the photo.

Are the emails a template "cease and desist" message, or specific to particular breaches?

Each notice refers to a specific image but they tend to send a whole pile at once. I then remove all images in the post that contains the reported image as they will keep doing it until all images have been removed.

All of the reports so far have been on behalf of AKM Images / GSI Media.

Who are the celebs concerned?
