I see you're point, it would leave it open to abuse but it would be mainly for newer members. I had a quick count and combining our 200 latest members, they have a total post count of "8". Its just a way to encourage participation you could say

One thing that is annoying me is that karma is not represented well for long-term members (as generally newer posts are only thanked for so those who made lots of posts long time ago are having their stats skewed). But not sure what we could do about that without measuring their stats from a certain date onward, which would slow things down due to excessive database queries we would have to perform for every poster.

I wholly agree with you. I would love to see long-term members be better represented. It just comes down to logistics i guess. Does the benefit of acknowledging members properly outweigh the time and effort taken to find previous stats (before the change).
