If they did bring The Master back then perhaps Bill Nighe would be a good choice to be the first blond Master. It would certainly make a change from the 'black hair and goatee' image.

Although it was done as a parody, Jonathan Pryce had the right look.

Yes, the Comic Relief spoof "The Curse of Fatal Death". You can still buy it although only on VHS. It's one I was happy to buy as the proceeds go to the Comic Relief charity.

It featured Rowan Atkinson as the 9th Doctor, Richard E. Grant as "The (Quite Handsome) 10th Doctor", Jim Broadbent as "The (Shy) 11th Doctor", Hugh Grant as "The (Handsome) 12th Doctor", Joanna Lumley as "The (Female) 13th Doctor", Julia Sawalha as the assistant and Jonathan Pryce as The Master.

12 "re"generations = 13 doctors.

You may notice in "The Five Doctors" how the 1st Doctor asks the 5th which regeneration - he'd regenerated 4 times, so his answer was "fourth", and the 1st Doctor realised that there were 5 incarnations.

Time Lords/Ladies can be granted an extra regeneration cycle (12 regenerations) by the High Council (the Master was offered a new life cycle in "The Five Doctors"). Specialised use of the Eye of Harmony gives one the ability to grant oneself that extra lifecycle, too.

Basically, Billy Hartnell was the first Doctor & Pat Troughton was the first "regeneration" so the regeneration count starts from the second doctor to number 12 being the 13th Doctor.

On the master, I'm not sure the operatically performed villain in the style of Anthony Ainsley's would work in the new show. I loved his performance but don't think it would fit today. The style of Roger Delgardo, or even Eric Roberts (to a lesser degree albeit a bit too two-dimensional) would probably fit better but as long as he is British. To me the master has to have the persona of a British gentleman.

How about Sir Derek Jacobi from 'The Scream of the Shalka'? We already have the fate of the Master, because 'The Gallifrey Chronicles' confirmed that both Richard E Grant (the TRUE 9th Doctor) and Chris Eccleston (the IMPOSTER) are the 9th Doctor - you see, somehow, there are three 9th Doctors. Perhaps three 10th Doctors, and so on...

This is whatr I mean when I said regeneration has never been consistent. If the new DW ever gets up to the 12th regeneration I'm sure they'll think up some new twist to keep things going.
