To be resonable, the book wasn't out for another year (maybe two) after the film. ;)

The Loom.

It really has gone terribly nerdish in here. :P

Yes, whoopsidaisy - I only realised when it was released after I'd posted, and really couldn't be arsed editing the post - too much nerdish dribble to trawl through. And thank you for reminding me of the name - behold... (majestic music, please, Mark) THE LOOM!

I just discovered today that there's actually a volume setting you can turn the show down to where the only thing left you can still here is Melanie's squawking...

Ah, so true...

But you've gotta admit that Kate O'Mara (the Rani) does look good in Mel's tight pants... :dribble:

yes, it was very fortunate for the script writer that she was able to do so, wasn't it?

That damn Melanie! Voice like fingernails on a blackboard & acts like a 5-year-old!

I once said in the Australian Dr. Who newsletter that I'd rather listen to Yoko Ono's greatest hits rather than Mel's screaming any day.

I also wrote my own Dr. Who story called "Disease Of The Daleks" in which Mel gets killed off at the end. She was my least favourite companion.

Still, it's nice to see Sylv again. I thought he was very charming as the Doctor.

And who can forget his muddled up phrases in "Time and the Rani" - "Time waits for snowman" is one of the better ones.

I still miss Robert Holmes - he was one of the greatest influences (for the good) in Doctor Who.

I think Sarah's a sweetie & had a great chemistry with Tom.

Yes, I do like all Sylv's mixed metaphores:

Dr: C'mon, Mel. Time melts the snowman.

Mel: Waits for no man!

Dr: What man?

He was a very endearing Doctor & really played a great part in revitalising the show. His last season (as I've already said) was superb & well crafted. He really came into his own.

Anyway, my worst companions:

Adric (prissy little wimp)
Vicki (another squealer)
Mel (enough said already)
Tegan (could've been a nice character if that JNT didn't Kath & Kim it)
Romana I (can't act)
Liz (too smart & too dull & didn't make sense as a Dr Who companion)

My best companions:

Ian (action man)
The Brigadier (ultimate straight man)
Benton (comic relief)
Barbara (great actress)
Victoria (characters from the past work better than those from the future)
Jamie (Fraser & Pat's was possibly the best chemistry the show's had)
Jo (she's a real sweetie)
Sarah Jane (good chemistry)
Harry (a fine actor)
Leela (not the perve factor as I liked the idea of a primitive companion)
Turlough (a snivelling coward & a betrayer - made a nice change)

There's also a couple that I love/hate. Zoe annoyed the sh!t out of me as she was another squealer & a smarty pants but she did add the the comedic chemistry with Pat & Fraser. And Ace is very annoying but, at the same time, a major step forward as she was assertive, tough & could look after herself (& she liked blowing things up!). But she is very much a product of her era so one has to accept her for that.

Oh, how could you do that to Sarah Jane? What did she ever do to you except get tied up a lot, look beautiful and be mildly more intelligent that most of the other companions? She's my second favourite (favourite is Romanadvoratrelundar - doesn't matter which incarnation).

Goddamn ITV and their bloody "Coronation Street". They frigging stole the ratings from Syl!

I'm so glad that Adric got killed off. But, of course, JNT gave him a hero's death. For what? For being a little know-it-all prick! I liked Vicki - she was clever and well-endowed :D. Mel had nice legs, so she isn't so bad. Tegan kept popping out (unfortunately not on camera), and it's more-or-less common knowledge that she never wore a bra. Romana I was smart, up herself and got stabbed nude in a freaky movie (freaky, huh?). I liked both Romanas, although Lalla Ward had much more time with us fans. I liked Liz too, because she was smart, and thought that her character could've gone somewhere if she'd stayed on. But why am I complaining? Jo replaced Liz!

Ian is one of my favourite companions - he was the action man, he taught science, he had that whole thing going with Barbara (I heartily recommend reading the new BBC Book "The Time Travellers" which really expands on their relationship) and he was like the Doctor in so many ways.

And then there are the UNIT chaps. Straight-laced Lethbridge Stewart with the fake moustache that would never stay in the right place, bumbling Benton and then the classic scene at the end of Episode Two of "The Three Doctors" where UNIT HQ disappears with the UNIT troops wondering what the hell was going on.

Victoria, Jamie, Zoe and Pat's Doctor - the true golden age of Doctor Who. Who can forget Victoria screaming at the sight of Yetis, or Frazer Hines' countless recollections of him and Pat pulling down either Debbie or Wendy's dresses/pants? It was terrific to have Frazer and Pat back together for "The Two Doctors", wasn't it?

Jo Grant, the mini-skirts and those boots. If you ever listen to the commentary of "The Three Doctors", you'll hear Katy bragging about how good she was at negotiating quarries with her high heels and boots. I went to the "Inside the TARDIS" tour recently and Tim Ferguson told Katy that once, at school, him and his classmates were watching an episode of Doctor Who (possibly "The Three Doctors", because I noticed a scene like this) when they were suddenly transfixed by the sight of what was up her dress!

Sarah Jane and Harry were two of the Doctor's better companions. Harry was like Ian, but with sideburns and flares. He was smart, a doctor and worked well with Tom's Doctor.

I agree about how great the idea of having a savage as a companion was. Leela worked well with the Doctor, and I loved how Phillip Hinchcliffe tried to 'smarten her up' starting with "The Talons of Weng-Chiang" (which he never completed because his contract as producer ended that year). Having Leela marry a Time Lord (who would eventually become Castellan) was a great idea, though.

I always think of Turlough as a weaker version of Ian or Harry, and more disceitful and very likely to betray the Doctor. I didn't like seeing him go as he was probably the fifth Doctor's best companion.

I always liked Ace, although she was annoying at times. She was the series' first real chance to move on in the companions department, and I think they managed to pull it off (they've succeeded with Rose more recently). The Nitro-9 added to her, erm, aceness, and "Ghost Light" made her more of a companion than others in the same decade ever were.

And now onto my favourites list:
1. Romana (ah, smart, sexy in all three incarnations and should've stayed with the Doctor forever)
2. Ian & Barbara (great couple, great future - one teaches science, the other history)
3. Sarah Jane (I just started singing the "K-9 and Co." theme, but Sarah's smart, beautiful and knows when not to scream)
4. Turlough (so non-chalant when sabotaging the TARDIS)
5. Lethbridge Stewart and the bumbling, grumbling U.N.I.T chaps (need I say more?)
6. Susan (not really the Doctor's granddaughter and, in a way, his ancestor, but she's cool)
7. Vicki (stranded teenager who's smarter than half the Western world :P)
8. Ace (street-wise kid with a mysterious past)
9. Fitz Kreiner (BBC Books - he's a great mix of the series' male companions)
10. K-9 (how can you forget him?)
