Post subject:  Change password in Windows 10

A work colleague asked me for help today, she bought her young kids a laptop for Christmas, Her kids set a password on the laptop but can't remember it. I've looked it up, but can't seem to find a way to get into BIOS on startup on Windows 10. Any ideas? Cheers in advance.

I hope this helps.

To access your BIOS on a Windows 10 PC, you must follow these steps.
Navigate to settings.
Select Update & security.
Select Recovery from the left menu.
Click Restart Now under Advanced startup.
Click Troubleshoot.
Click Advanced options.
Select UEFI Firmware Settings.
Click Restart.

From the way it sounds, they can't get into the Windows environment.

To access the BIOS on start, the old tricks of F10, ESC, F2 etc. still work on boot, but if it's a branded laptop they may have pre-set fast-start which will not display the bios screens. Have a look in the manual for accessing the bios, or alternatively go to the manufacturers website and search - each brand tends to vary slightly.
If they're not flashing, then you'll need to continually press the magic key once you power on.

Having said this, password systems are not meant to be easily bypassed by ordinary punters.

From what I have seen a lot of Windows 10 pcs no longer work by pressing the F2 or similar keys. Hopefully they will be able to get into the Bios using one of the methods we have listed.

Thanks for the replies, I found what I was looking for. In Windows 10, when you get to the password screen tab down to the power icon on the bottom right of screen. Press Shift as you select restart and the computer will give you several options once it restarts eg Safe Mode, EUFI etc.

The problem was solved fortunately as my friends neighbour somehow guessed the password in about 2 minutes!
