Are there any external hard drives that are just powered by USB and NOT mains (240 volt) power.

Lots, I buy all my drives from Officworks, I find them the cheapest.
The drives called 'personal' drives are are usually USB powered, the ones called 'External' usually come with a power supply.
I have to buy those with their own power, because my 9 year old PC can't see the others.
The prices are still up atm due to the Thailand floods.

Something to remember with both External & Personal drives is that if you have access or use both Mac & PC ...
Format/ plug in to a PC first so when you later plug into a Mac, a small file will be added and you can swap and see
plus share those files easily!

When Mac formats the FAT32 device it will take it over and without mucking around, will only see Mac in Mac & PC
on PC = weird! Defo ... a hassle but that is heaps easier then setting up the different permissions, that you need to make,
if you have it "appleafied" from the get go :cofee:

I also think it may have to do with the capacity as to wheather it is AC powered or not.

From my big W days, we had 500GB with usb power, but the 1TB had AC power...

If you go for Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Ultra Portable, they come in USB3 variety and are USB powered.
