Joondalup mum-of-three Monique Garcia is determined to find a solution for nine-year-old Nathan, who was born with only half of his heart.
"He's missing half a heart, but he miraculously survived only to at one year old be struck down by a second life threatening condition, completely unrelated,'' Ms Garcia said.
"The infantile scoliosis wasn't picked up early enough and as a result he missed a treatment that may have cured it.
"We've been told to enjoy the time we have left.''
The scoliosis means Nathan is unable to have heart or lung transplant, and must wear a back brace daily.
Ms Garcia, who has three children under the age of 10, her goal of raising $1 million to go towards researching a solution for her son and children like him.
"He's the only child in the world with both conditions,'' she said.
"I believe it's possible to help Nathan, to restore his health.''
Ms Garcia said Nathan, a Year 3 student, loved watching football and playing the drums.
"He's a battler, he's a legend,'' Ms Garcia said.
"Having a kid with half a heart has literally taught me to live life with a whole heart.''
