Before new technologies killed us off... My Dad was a compositor by trade. He used to set type by hand. Then the monotype machines came into general use. He became a TAFE teacher later in life and was there when the first computer typesetting machines came online. Now it's mostly CTP, but we still actually burn plates from negatives for one and two colour work. I still run Heidelberg platens and Cylinders built in the 1950s and 60s. Still use the early 50s Platen for printing and numbering. I also have experience on digital presses. Still a lot of "old school" technology used in the industry, but not that old. Some of the stuff I do, sadly, doesn't even get taught at college anymore.

My first apprentice printing job" was hand feeding an old crossland clam shell press die cutting Sebel Hotel pamphlets = scary repeditive work. Other than that it was all Heidleberg SORDZ then 102 Speedmasters all the way. Funny how in spite of the GTO /MO ? having all the cutting numbering stuff of the platens, the old T series still rule and do a better job ..viva crunch & spray ! Aussie C trivia . Hey Dad`s " Nudge" Chris Trusswell was a Litho Apprentice & was a hoot at Ultimo SoGA ,back in the day
