Government pushes forward with internet filtering

Quote:
The Federal Government is pushing ahead with its controversial plan to filter the internet, saying illegal material can be blocked "with 100 per cent accuracy and negligible impact on internet speed".

The ISP filter plan has attracted a chorus of criticism from industry and internet users, who claim its introduction will strangle internet speeds, curb free speech and be used by the government to ban content it deems "undesirable".

Internet search giant Google has come out in opposition to the Federal Government's push to introduce mandatory ISP filtering.

In a post on Google Australia's official blog, the company said the plan raised concerns about censorship.

Every Australian internet user should be concerned about this. The leak of the ACMA blacklist earlier this year showed the process is open to abuse. The list of banned sites included harmless material like a dentist and a dog grooming business, and legal material such as an academic discussion about the pros and cons of euthanasia.

On top of that, ISPs will be required to wear the cost of filtering. This will, of course, be passed on to users.

If you want to protest this, don't fire off an angry email to Senator Conroy. That will not get you anywhere. Emails generally get automated responses with little human intervention and will not change policy. See Don't waste your time, waste theirs! Bernard Keane’s guide to writing to Ministers. This relies on old fashioned snail mail but it is the only way to make sure a human deals with your complaint. Doing it this way will create huge amounts of paperwork for senior public servants in Conroy's department. It is effectively a snail mail DDoS attack.

Well, they did say that, if they are elected, this is something they would do but it's an inevitable happen stance when you let Christians run a country...

Anyway, people have got to stop expecting the government to act like their parents & take a bit of responsibility themselves. It's a pretty sad fact that there are so many "adults" who don't believe they are personally responsible for what their kids see & hear - even when it's in their own home...

What happens when Dad comes home & finds little Johnny unconscious after guzzling his 25 year old single malt scotch? Do we keep blaming the government & the bottle shops until the government comes over everybody's house & puts a $5 padlock of their booze cabinets for them?

My favourites are still the ones that let their kids stay up late & watch a very explicit or violent movie right until the end & then complain to the television station, letters to the editor or person next-to them on the train about how their kid has learned some unfortunate choice words & won't go to bed with the lights off for a whole week.

Kind of makes me realise that my parents didn't do such a bad job of raising their three (without bring the government into it).

This is one of the crappest things in Australias political history. Is there any chance of this site being brought down? Because apparently there are hundreds of legit sites which have been black listed. Unfortunately the stupid liberal party have given the boot to their 2 best members so now whoever we vote in its going to be a conservative christian wanker.

its basically about re-gaining world government/cultural/religious control by the christians [popists especially]. They've been activating for years now and have been behind so much in the last decade and more [bush/blair/howard going into iraq].

Its evil and folks need to seriously get concerned.

Abbott and dud...er Rudd are two testicles of the same old vile ball bag if you ask me. only ones right the others left orientated.

sorry for bringing the debate down to a street level.

they really sicken me with all their environmentalist nonsense [just another one of their covers and way ti impose more taxes by stealth]. hate control freaks!

Isn't this the new system 6that cost billions to create & was cracked in about two hours by a twelve-year-old with one PC?

Personally, I don't think they'll ever stop people from accessing porn. The 'net's been around far too long now & people using it have become far too Internet savvy. People will always find a way around.

They still can't even stop people from downloading free music illegally. Various governments (including the US) & the biggest entertainment company, Sony, spent a shitload & tried everything & achieved nothing. Napster got shut own, WinMX started up, WinMX got shut down, Kazaa & Kazaa Lite started up, Kazaa got shut down eMule started up, eMule got shut down now SoulSeek has taken the baton. It was like watching Wylie Coyote trying to catch the Road Runner. Their final resort was getting the recording artists doing television appearances begging people to please stop doing it because they're all so poor...

I remember years ago reading 90% of the Internet search topic in the US was related to porn. Mind you, that was years ago & I doubt if the statistic is still that high but I bet its still pretty high. The ISPs know that & they'll be sympathetic to the porn merchants because they won't want to lose such a large part of their clientele.

If the government thinks they have people who can't stop people downloading illegal music but are smarter than those who manage the porn hosting sites than good luck to them! The cleverest & trickiest people on the whole 'net are porn & I'm sure they already know exactly how the new government software works & have already figures out a way around it...

-add monarchism [aristocracy] as well big business in along with the papists. They've all combined to systematically destroy the working classes thru -unregulated immigration levels and the deregulated global economy in the last few decades that is only to the benefit of the rich basically.

and thereby our hard won democratic freedoms.
