Helen Reddy, Australian singer of hit song I Am Woman, dies aged 78 in Los Angeles

Australian singer Helen Reddy, who reached number 1 around the world with hits like I Am Woman, has died in Los Angeles at the age of 78.

Her family confirmed she died yesterday.

She had been out of the limelight for several years after being diagnosed with dementia.

Born in Melbourne in 1941, she started her career as Baby Helen touring with her parents.

She won Bandstand in 1965 and went straight to the United States.

Reddy had her first hit with I Don't Know How To Love Him in 1971, making her the first Australian to top the US charts.

It was one of three number-one chart toppers she released.

But it was the release of her signature song I Am Woman in 1972 in particular that propelled her to international fame.

She co-wrote the song with Ray Burton and it became the anthem of the women's movement.

In 1973, I Am Woman became the first Australian-penned song to win a Grammy Award.

Eddie Van Halen dies at 65 after cancer battle

Eddie Van Halen, the renowned lead guitarist of iconic rock group Van Halen, has died, according to a social media post by his son. He was 65.

Eddie Van Halen, whose full name was Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, and his brother Alex Van Halen began performing together as teens, but formed the core of what would later become Van Halen after meeting David Lee Roth.

Over four decades, Van Halen released more than a dozen albums together.

Van Halen's guitar wizardry anchored the band through four turbulent decades of platinum albums, sold-out tours and a revolving door of lead singers, from Roth to Sammy Hagar to Gary Cherone and back to Hagar and Roth again.

His solos crackled like lightning and powered all the band's signature songs: "Runnin' With the Devil," "Panama," "Hot For Teacher," "Why Can't This Be Love?" and of course "Jump" -- their only No. 1 hit -- which topped the pop singles charts in 1984.

Van Halen also famously lent his guitar chops to Michael Jackson for "Beat It," the smash 1983 hit from the landmark "Thriller" album that melded Jackson's silky pop with a harder rock edge.

Speaking to CNN in 2017 after making a charitable contribution to help raise money for school music programs, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer noted the role music has played in his story.

"My whole life has been music," he told CNN's John Vause. "I could not imagine anything else."

In a tribute for Rolling Stone's 100 Greatest Guitarists, Van Halen, who was No. 8, wrote that Eric Clapton (No. 2) was "basically the only guitar player who influenced me -- even though I don't sound like him."

James Bond actor Sir Sean Connery dies aged 90

Sir Sean Connery has died at the age of 90, his family has said.

The Scottish actor was best known for his portrayal of James Bond, being the first to bring the role to the big screen and appearing in seven of the spy thrillers.

His acting career spanned decades and his many awards included an Oscar, two Bafta awards and three Golden Globes.

Sir Sean's other films included The Hunt for Red October, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade and The Rock.

He was largely regarded as being the best actor to have played 007 in the long-running franchise, often being named as such in polls.

His Oscar came in 1988, when he was named best supporting actor for his role as an Irish cop in The Untouchables.

He was knighted by the Queen at Holyrood Palace in 2000.

In August, he celebrated his 90th birthday.

Dave Prowse: Darth Vader actor dies aged 85

Dave Prowse, the Bristolian former bodybuilder best known for playing Darth Vader in the original Star Wars trilogy, has died aged 85.

Prowse was cast as Vader for his imposing physique, even though the role was voiced by James Earl Jones.

Prowse's career as an actor spanned 50 years, but it was his role as the Sith Lord in Star Wars that brought him international fame.

Unfortunately, his West Country accent was not deemed suitable for the part of a menacing Hollywood villain and his lines were dubbed.

However, Prowse was a definitive presence in all three of the early films, thanks to his hulking 6ft 6in (1.98 m) frame, honed by the weightlifting skills which saw him represent England at the Commonwealth Games in the early 1960s.

Even before he began acting, Prowse found success in Hollywood circles, preparing the late Christopher Reeve for the physical demands of his role as Superman, as the actor's personal trainer.

Prowse made his film debut in 1967 James Bond spoof Casino Royale playing Frankenstein's Creature, a part he was asked to play again in two films from the iconic Hammer film series, 1970's Horror Of Frankenstein and 1974's Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell.

He also regularly featured on cult series such as The Saint, Space 1999 and Doctor Who, in which he was cast as a minotaur in the 1972 episode The Time Monster, opposite Jon Pertwee.

Spotted by director George Lucas in the 1971 film Clockwork Orange, in which he played a bodyguard, Prowse was invited to audition for the roles of Darth Vader and Chewbacca in 1977's Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope.

With the success of Star Wars, Prowse became a regular on the fan circuit and attended conventions around the world for almost 40 years.

Dame Barbara Windsor: Carry On and EastEnders actress dies aged 83

Actress Dame Barbara Windsor, best known for her roles in EastEnders and the Carry On films, has died aged 83.

Her husband Scott Mitchell said she had died peacefully from Alzheimer's at a London care home on Thursday evening.

She had been diagnosed with the disease in 2014 and had moved to a care home earlier this year.

Mr Mitchell said she would be remembered for the "love, fun, friendship and brightness she brought to all our lives".

Dame Barbara appeared in nine of the 31 films in the comedy series Carry On, and Sparrows Can't Sing, for which she was nominated for a Bafta, as well as small parts in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and On the Fiddle with Sir Sean Connery.

She was well known to millions of TV viewers for her portrayal of landlady Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders, starring alongside her on-screen children Ross Kemp and Steve McFadden.

Her last appearance in the soap came in 2016, the same year she was made a dame for her services to charity and entertainment.

She also worked in theatre - making her stage debut at 13 - and appeared in productions including Oh! What A Lovely War and Fings Ain't Wot They Used To Be.

After her dementia diagnosis Dame Barbara became an ambassador for the Alzheimer's Society and met Prime Minister Boris Johnson to raise awareness about the disease.

Like her EastEnders character she was born in east London, in Shoreditch in 1937.

She married three times, including to small-time criminal Ronnie Knight, and she also dated Charlie Kray and his brother Reggie.

The actress married Mr Mitchell in 2000, with the pair having first met in 1992.

Veteran showbiz star Lorrae Desmond, best known for A Country Practice has died, aged 91.

Her death on the Gold Coast was announced on social media and confirmed by friends.

Dinah Lee said: “My beautiful friend and a true Australian Legend passed away today. We toured Vietnam together in 1967 and remained friends to this day. My thoughts and love to your family, friends and your many fans. Rest In Peace Lorrae Desmond.”

Desmond enjoyed a vast showbiz career including The Lorrae Desmond Show, Homicide, Number 96, Arcade, Home & Away, stage musicals and cabaret, entertaining troops in Vietnam from 1967-1971, plus the Middle East, Malaysia, Singapore, Kenya and Somalia.

In January she was honoured with an OAM, for significant service to the performing arts as an actor, entertainer and singer, added to her MBE.

“I don’t know what I did to deserve it. But I am very honoured. It was a big surprise!” she recently told TV Tonight.

“I have many favourite memories: writing Lorrae Desmond Shows on sick bags while flying from London to Australia. Singing for an audience, it’s the best feeling. Entertaining our boys in Vietnam, seeing the smile return to their eyes.”

Desmond was also the first woman to win a Gold Logie for The Lorrae Desmond Show in 1962.

On A Country Practice she played Shirley Dean Gilroy from 1981 – 1992.

“The magic started with the good writers, and good storylines. There were a lot of women in the production team. The cast clicked, we had a great time together,” she said.

She also had roles on Riptide, The Outsiders and made variety appearances on The Jack Benny Show, In Melbourne Tonight, Ted Hamiltons Musical World, The Graham Kennedy Show, Kamahl, Celebrity Squares, Parkinson in Australia.

Seven’s Network Programming Director, Angus Ross, said: “Everyone at Seven is saddened by the news of the passing of Lorrae Desmond. A highly talented, respected and generous actor, she was a vital part of the Seven family for many years. Lorrae was a pioneer in the Australian television industry and she will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends.”
