Rio 2016: Anna Flanagan misses out on Hockeyroos Olympic squad, as Australia takes 12 debutants to RioThe Hockeyroos will be relying largely on newcomers to drive their campaign in Rio de Janeiro after the squad was named for the upcoming Olympics.
Only four of the 16-player squad are returning Olympians - the major name to miss out is Anna Flanagan, who was at the centre of controversy over her failure to inform authorities about a drink-driving charge.
Flanagan, who was part of the team that came fifth in London, missed out on this year's International Hockey Open and the Champions Trophy after Hockey Australia discovered she had been fined $1,000 and lost her licence for 10 months for driving under the influence.
At the time Hockey Australia said Flanagan remained eligible for selection for Rio, but she was not among those named to the squad on Monday.
Madonna Blyth and Casey Sablowski are the veterans of the team - both players will be competing in their third Olympics in Rio, while Emily Smith and Jodie Kenny will back up for a second Games after appearing in London four years ago.
Australia's women head into the first South American Games as world number three, and will compete in Pool B against Argentina (two), Great Britain (six), USA (seven), Japan (10) and India (13).
Squad: Brooke Peris, Casey Sablowski, Edwina Bone, Emily Smith, Gabrielle Nance, Georgie Parker, Georgina Morgan, Grace Stewart, Jane-Anne Claxton, Jodie Kenny, Karri McMahon, Kathryn Slattery, Kirstin Dwyer, Madonna Blyth, Mariah Williams, Rachael Lynch.
