Is the NBL going to survive?

I like parts of the deal aka Foxtel showing every game but what does the teams lose in people not attending games. Does it equal out. Does the teams get all the $35 mill split up? Does the Kings and Bullets comeback?

The Wildcats are owned by Jack Bendat who yes is like in his 80's but I cant seem many teams getting 3 owners. Also having BA take over the rights to the teams is a bit worrying if they decide to change up names etc.

$35m Fox deal hinges on reform

November 06, 2008 04:15pm

THE vote for change Saturday in Sydney potentially will land a new-NBL its most lucrative television deal in basketball's chequered Australian history.

The $35 million five-year deal with Fox Sports would see every match of the new league's 2009-10 season televised – most of them live – giving the sport and the league unprecedented national television cover.

The pay-TV network also would annually televise three Boomers and three Opals international matches.

The key to the bid's success however hinges on Basketball Australia and the NBL on Saturday adopting the independent review recommendations, which require major structural changes to the floundering sport.

BA's state associations and NBL owners will vote on whether the two bodies merge into one national organisation.

Some clubs and even some state associations appear reticent to relinquish their powers, despite the parlous state of the game in Australia.

"We're supporting the changes, no problem at all," 36ers owner Mal Hemmerling said.

"I'm going over with the intent to change."

Basketball SA chief executive Mark Hubbard reiterated the same sentiments.

"To paraphrase Barack Obama, it's time for change," Hubbard said.

"We're definitely supporting the changes.

"There's a leap of faith required but the sport needs us to move forward or be left behind by other sports."

The meeting requires 75 per cent of the membership to support reform recommendations.

BA chief executive Scott Derwin said the Fox Sports offer was a coup for the reform process.

"Fox Sports are very excited about the prospect of a reformed sport and a reformed body and they've put a very, very good offer on the table if the vote is carried," he said. "Their opinion of the way the sport is structured at the moment is that it's completely flawed. They're not at all excited by the current model.

"We only advised all the stakeholders last night about the Fox offer because it's only come to fruition the last few days.

"You would hope it would excite them, especially the owners.

"The alternative is to keep going the way we've been going and I doubt anyone in their right mind would agree to that."

Fox only started televising matches late last month and is only showing a weekly Wednesday night fixture, a fair indication of how it views the current NBL.

Some clubs and associations remain unconvinced, causing sufficient concern to prompt Queensland Basketball chairman Neil Fitzpatrick to write all the parties concerned, imploring their cooperation.

The Advertiser has obtained a copy of Fitzpatrick's letter calling for stakeholders to set aside self-interest and move the game forward.

"Queensland implores those not supporting the changes to reconsider their position, given change, by its very nature, includes risks and compromises that we all have to accommodate for the greater good," Fitzpatrick wrote.

"The destructive power of even one dissenting vote cannot be overstated. Maybe there is risk but is the risk so high that it is worth destroying any chance of reinvigorating our sport?"

Derwin said basketball was healthy at the grassroots level with high participation rates.

"But certainly at the top end this could be a vote for its survival," he said.

"Most people realise a good NBL is the showcase of the sport.

"This is one of those moments in sport that comes along once in a lifetime so it's critical we get it across the line on Saturday."

Well it is voted in, now to see if it changes anything next season.

Basketball bodies unite

November 08, 2008

AUSTRALIAN basketball officials have celebrated a momentous day in the chequered history of the sport in this country, with an unanimous agreement to bring the national and domestic organising bodies under the one umbrella.

The votes taken at a Sydney hotel on Saturday morning are expected to fast- track a lucrative multi-year deal with Fox Sports.

The 16 members of the Basketball Australia Council and the 11 National Basketball League participants voted to implement probably the most significant change in the history of the sport in Australia since the NBL was formed 29 years ago.

David Thodey, the interim chairman of BA and the NBL said the historic decision would allow the new single administrative body to take decisions which couldn't have been made before.

He said it meant Australian basketball could now have one set of broadcast rights and sponsorships that operated across different levels and just one set of administrators.

"It's a momentous day, it gives us the opportunities to do things we couldn't do before and to take the sport forward, so we're very excited," Thodey said.

With this agreement, the new administration is set to press ahead with its negotiations with Fox whose proposal is believed to include live coverage of every game in a revamped NBL from the 2009-10 season onward, plus regular internationals featuring the Boomers and Opals.

The new administration is now set to implement the recommendations of a two stage independent review of Australian basketball conducted by consultancy firm Ernst & Young and specialist sports and management advisors DSEG.

Thodey and Basketball Australia interim chief executive Scott Derwin stressed the revamped national league competition for 2009-10 would again start in October.

The independent review advocated a minimum of eight clubs, though Thodey and Derwin suggested that was not set in stone.

However, they suggested financial viability rather than geography was likely to be the major factor in determining which areas were represented.

Thodey said he hoped the criteria for inclusion in the new national league would be finalised before the end of this year.

the NBL died when foxtel took over the rights from channel 10.

I used to watch games late night on channel 10 all the time in the 90's. As soon as those games disappeared, so did I from watching them.

There was no advertisements to watch the games on FTA tv so there was no reminders for me.

I have foxtel now, but just arent interested in watching anymore.

Ch10 screwed the telecasts when they took the games to late nights. It was most popular in the late 80's early 90's when Ch7 telecast the games live in prime time. Ch10 couldnt get rid of the rights quick enough and if it wasnt for Fox the league would have died long ago.

See above Ch10 didnt do anything to help their cause. When they bought the rights off the NBL they thought they were getting the ratings of Ch7 but like they do now they consistantly showed less of the games and at midnight.

Well since Fox only started playing 1 game a week on a Wed night this month, it is hard for anyone to get into the league this season. As with the league losing the Kings and the Bullets it was not a great advertisement for the league.

Well it is certainly not looking good for the NBL now and the future.

NBL WEIGHING OPTIONS ON TAIPANS

The National Basketball League (NBL) is reviewing the feasibility of providing a financial rescue package to the Cairns Taipans team that could see the club play out the 2008/09 season.

The Taipans announced on Tuesday that the club had entered voluntary administration based on professional advice received concerning the long-term financial viability of the organisation.

Interim Chief Executive Officer of Basketball Scott Derwin flew to Cairns on Tuesday afternoon and conducted a series of meetings with the administrator, the team’s venue and the players and coaching staff to identify options for the club to continue operations for the remainder of the season.

“The meetings have been positive, conciliatory and constructive,” said Derwin. “We have a reasonable degree of confidence that, if a rescue package could be offered by the League, the Taipans could still be saved.”

Any rescue package would likely be similar to that which recently helped the Sydney Spirit team and would involve the players and coaching staff taking a significant pay cut for the remainder of the season.

The Board of Basketball will now work with the club’s Cairns-based administrator, KPMG, and the players and coaching staff to determine the capital injection required from the League to keep the team operating for the remainder of the 2008/09 campaign.

With the Taipans scheduled to play its next game on Saturday on the road against the Gold Coast Blaze, it is anticipated that any rescue package, if offered, would need to be agreed by Thursday to enable the match to go ahead.

Since receiving the shock news of the Taipans’ financial troubles, the League has sought and received from all other NBL teams formal assurances that they are in an adequate financial position to see out the remainder of the 2008/09 season. Those assurances have made it possible for the League to investigate the feasibility of offering the Taipans a lifeline, but Derwin made it clear that it was highly unlikely that similar rescue packages could be offered to any other teams in the future.

The nbl only has themselves to blame. It's run by these ego driven hacks who always think they are right and don't care about anyone's opinion and the players out on the court are not worth going to see either. Who wants to go see some old washed up hack who can barely jump along with blokes who look like they are open age players.

I remember when Ten first had the broadcast rights. The Sunday live games were usually good, but when they started showing live games on a Friday night (or Saturday, can't remember), they were almost all floggings and hardly worth watching at all. The move to Friday night was a bad one. Or badly-timed, anyway.

The ABC did an okay job with it, I thought.

Chuck Harmison has been wasted space as the NBL's head honcho. "We'll look into doing this, that other option's a possibility..." He never actually DID anything. Here's hoping the new guys are more active.

I'd kinda be interested to see what would happen if they cancelled next season and came back in '10. And/or switched back to winter.

Chuck Harmison was given a team of like 2 people to look after the league. He really has no control of the downfall of the NBL. He certainly hasnt helped though.

Hopefully when Andrew Vlahov is part of the new BA team he can turn around the league like he did with the Wildcats. He seems to have a smart business brain on him (well he did complete a business degree at Stanford Uni in the US).

Ch10 stuffed the telecasting on FTA after moving alot of the games to really late night timeslots. Ch2 did what they could with what they had but after the money had dried up they had to let it go. Now Foxtels injection of cash next season if all goes well should be a positive. Hopefully the telecasting of all games will go ahead and get the NBL out there more.

Well the end of the existing NBL league is now gone. South Dragons 3-2 GF winners against the Tigers.

Now it will be interesting to see if the new league is ready for next season. Interesting to see which teams get in. All current contracts become pretty much null and void so it is going to be a meat market.
