Bullets stars CJ and Sam are gone from the Bullets.

CJ is off to Europe and Sam has asked for a release from the club (he is linked to the Tigers).

CJ has gone overseaso but has signed with the NZ Breakers. This is the 2nd time he has said he is going overseas to break a contract but then signs with another NBL team.

Tigers have just signed Sam McKinnon on a 3 season deal.

Cairns have signed former Tiger Dave Thomas.

Wildcats Young Development Player Tom Garlepp broke his hand playing in the SBL last weekend and will be out of action for at least 3 months.

NBL salary cap still dogs the Tigers
AAP - September 14, 2008, 5:52 pm

Salary cap queries are still hovering over the Melbourne Tigers, who got the defence of their NBL title underway with a comfortable victory over the Sydney Spirit.

Already the reigning league champions, the Tigers added gun imports Ebi Ere and Rod Grizzard to their line-up, along with Olympian and former MVP Sam Mackinnon.

Former import Dave Thomas left to join Cairns, while veteran Darryl McDonald retired.

Their new players have joined Chris Anstey, another former league MVP, and David Barlow, both of whom represented Australia at the Beijing Olympics.

The league's salary cap is just $840,000, but there are suggestions Melbourne boasts more like a $2 million line-up.

That's something Spirit coach Rob Beveridge didn't dispute after his team suffered a season-opening 112-102 defeat.

"On paper they probably are," he said.

"That's arguably the best starting five in the history of the NBL. They've got three MVPs on the floor.

"We've got to try to aspire to get to that level."

They actually only have two MVPs, while Ere was a close second - to Anstey - in voting for the award last year, but it's a moot point.

The NBL has already admitted it doesn't have the ability to properly police its salary cap and the contrast between the Tigers and the Spirit was obvious.

While the Tigers are successful both on and off the floor, the Spirit are the latest incarnation of the West Sydney Razorbacks.

Now the only club in Sydney after the demise of the Kings, the Spirit are already under financial strain and had just 1,573 fans to the game.

Tigers coach Al Westover, who coached his side to victory over the Kings in last year's deciding grand final game in front of 10,000 fans, admits the issues in the harbour city are a concern.

"We've got to give them time. They're a new group with a new administration," he said.

"I think there's some good young talent there.

"It's a concern but the first few games traditionally it's a bit slow. Hopefully when the footy finals finish it can pick up."

The Tigers insist some of their players are not getting their full value to be with the club.

Rather they have decided to join an outfit with a solid foundation and no question marks over its future.

Mackinnon was asked about Beveridge's comment it was the best starting five ever and he replied: "It's a big call. There's been some pretty good teams over the years.

"We look pretty good on paper but I've been on a few teams that look good on paper."

Westover has heard the rumours about his team, but says he is only concerning himself with coaching.

"As a coach I'm never involved with the signing of the players. Our (general manager) has done all that," he said.

"I've said all along I don't know what people are making.

"I do know (Anstey) came to us for a hell of a lot less. He could be making more other places.

"People are saying we're over (the cap) but I just worry about what's on the court."

Everyone keeps saying how adelaide are the dark horses and all this crap. Adelaide are a poorly coached pathetic underachieving basketball team. They have the second best list in the league and they are only barely going to make the finals. People that said bruce was an nba prospect what do they think now. The bloke is nothing more than an aba level player.

Worthington was going to sign up with Cairns and as per usual at the last minute changes his mind and signs with the Tigers. The Tigers have released Hoare, Crosswell and Greer is looking elsewhere.
