Saw this interesting read in the Sunday Times this morning and totally agree.
Gaze: Fix NBL now
By Tim Morrissey
10jan03
ANDREW GAZE says the NBL is on a slippery dip to oblivion unless clubs vote for significant changes at a special meeting scheduled for January 20.
The league's greatest player is convinced the structure that ties the NBL to Basketball Australia's One Basketball concept is simply not working.
"You only have to look around the competition to see the difficulties that a number of clubs are facing to say that we have got to do things better," said Gaze, also a part-owner of the Melbourne Tigers.
"We need to look at every alternative to find a way to improve the economics and the management of the competition."
The NBL clubs have a history of resisting major change. But they appear to have no option as the league financially bleeds to death without a naming-rights sponsor or free-to-air TV deal.
At the January 20 meeting, the clubs will be formally asked to set in motion the mechanisms to overturn the current board and replace league chairman John Harvey and chief executive Peter Ali with a commissioner at the end of the season.
Ali's future with the NBL is on the line at the meeting, with many club officials expressing dissatisfaction with his performance.
He fell foul of officials after he pushed for a New Zealand consortium to buy the debt-ridden Canberra Cannons when they went into voluntary administration last month.
"I think the New Zealand debacle showed that Peter Ali doesn't realise who he's working for, but he's quickly going to find out," one club source said.
Ali may survive if he accepts a demotion, but the NBL's links with One Basketball, run by Basketball Australia, are certain to be severed.
"It's pretty clear the NBL needs its own identity and we are not going to get that through One Basketball," another source said.
The only hurdle to forcing major change on the NBL is some disagreement about the timing of the meeting and the extent of any restructure.
But Gaze warned that tough action was needed now.
"More of the same isn't going to get it done," Gaze said. "It's time to be more innovative and come up with a different formula to achieve success."

The NBL has announced that next season a NZ team will be playing in the NBL. It will be coached by a 4 time championship coach from the Waikito Warriors. Plus Canberra will be based in Newcastle and playing home games in Newcastle and 5 games in Canberra.
How bout the costs travelling to NZ for teams like the Wildcats. Hopefully the NZ consortium will be subsidising the costs.
Interesting to see how things will go next season.

Personally I don't think it will work due to the lack of teams.
Quote: Basketball draws up conference system By Stephen Howell MELBOURNE THE National Basketball League is to set up a conference system for next season, splitting the league into two groups of six.
The latest plan on the drawing board has the Perth Wildcats in the group with Melbourne Tigers, Victoria Giants, Adelaide 36ers, Cairns Taipans and Townsville Crocodiles.
The other pool has the four New South Wales teams - Sydney Kings, West Sydney Razorbacks, Wollongong Hawks and Hunter Pirates- Brisbane Bullets and New Zealand Breakers.
Under the plan, teams would play four games against those in their conference and twice against the others for a total of 32 games in a season that would start in October.
A move to start a month earlier was stymied by the Athens Olympic Games not finishing until the end of August.
This season, each team plays the other 11 three times for a total of 33 home-and-away games.
NBL commissioner Rick Burton wants to maintain derby rivalries and cut travel costs.
He said the planned draw was not set in stone - he intended to present the finished product at the next participants' meeting in April.
If rejected, the plan would have to go back to Canadian company Optimal Planning Solutions to be redone.
Burton said the budget allowed for a new start on the fixtures, but complaints could reflect that clubs had different agendas on whom they wanted to play and why.
The Breakers were furious that they and the other new team, Hunter, had been lumped in with this season's top four.
"New Zealand have offered some comments to us and we're trying to incorporate those," Burton said.
He said as well as cutting travel costs, conferences could have marketing advantages through having two champions, who would then play for the league title.
"There are benefits . . . but it's not a particularly traditional Australian concept," Burton said, adding that the NBL had conferences in 1983 and 1984 when there were 16 and 17 teams.
Burton said the NBL would work with the clubs before the final version was published.

Well it looks like it is curtains for the Victoria Giants.
They have been told the players are to look for new positions elsewhere. They made a loss of over $500k last season and the owners are pulling out.
The NBL is either going to relocate and make a team elsewhere in Vic or it looks more likely a new Gold Coast team will be in the competition next season.
NBL is not looking too good atm.

Dunno about recently, but it used to be cheaper to fly to Perth or Melbourne from Brisbane, if you had a couple of days stayover in New Zealand, maybe that has changed since Virgin started up, but flight costs are not all that much different.

Maybe there is hope with the NBL announcing today they have signed up Philips as the league naming rights sponsor for the next 3 years worth 1 million. Finally Rick Burton has come through with what he promised.
The game on Jan 15 between the Wildcats and Tigers will be played in Asia. SO I lose a home game to see.
Hopefully the league can get FTA coverage next.

Well Gold Coast has been awarded an NBL license again from next season. Davew Claxtons consortium were awarded the deal.
Singapores been a failure imo (only 1 or 2 locals in the whole team) since the team is made up of has beens. They just cant get a crowd or a win.
Interesting to see if the Gold Coast team can survive as they used to have the Rollers there in the 90's.
