OK heres the story.

My family has a history of being on the larger side and especially around the mid section. Most of my family is over 100kg.

I had always been an athlete of some sorts in my youth until I got married 11 years ago. I was playing basketball 2 nights a week. I played badminton 1 night a week, as well as religiously doing between 150-500 situps/cruches a night.

About 7 years ago I was diagnosed with a series dose of Irriatable Bowel Syndrome which resulted in me losing 14 kilos. I looooooooove junk food and always have. Have to hasve it every day in some form. Plus I love my soft drink. It is my vice.

Now 2 years ago I was hit by a forklift at work. Not too serious but enough to put me on compo and having a bad back strain which has never recovered. Physio and Pilates helped. Then last year I had 2 car accidents resulting in my back being re injured. I wake up every day sore and most exercise results in my back being sore. Plus I got a new job last year resulting in me being behind a desk on a computer for 95% of the day.

I dont eat that much junk food as I used to but you know just snack here and there.

OK if you are still with me my weight really fluctuates. I have normally stuck around the 103kg. I am 6 foot 4. When I met my wife 12 years ago I lost 25kgs in 5 months. I went from 104kg to 79kg. Then I got married and it just crept up and crept up. I went up to 117kgs over the next 5 years. Then over the 3 after that I lost 16 kgs to get to 101kgs. I maintained that for about 2 years until my accidents. I went on some medication last year which resulted in me putting on 8kgs to get to 109kg which I am now.

My current exercise regime is this. I have been doing weights on my upper half (chest/arms) 2/3 nights a week. resulting in some muscle happening. I still try and do sit up/crunches depending on my back but only do normally 2 sets of 30. My lower half (legs) are fine. Wife says they are skinny from all that younger exercise.

My mid section is my problem area. The usual spare tyre and getting the middle age spread. I am 33.

I just need some help with exercises that dont affect the back region (I dont swim) that has some sort of cardio to help me with the loss of the kgs. My diet is still a tough area because I have a huge sweet tooth.

I want to get down to around 105kg initially and then around the 100kgs. That is my ideal weight me thinks.

Any suggestions if I havent bored you to death yet?

G'day djmenow.

Your story is remarkably similar to mine, except the fact that my back injury isn't nearly as bad. Mine only flares up probably once a year - the last being 2 weeks ago.

I'm exactly 6 foot, and currently weigh 105 kg. That sound pretty serious, but as I have a pretty muscular build, big arms, shoulders and legs, I reckon I'm about 10 kg overweight. I'm currently going to the gym with a small group of guys basically receiving one on one personal training. I've been told the best way to lose the spare tyre is cardio, which is what I enjoy.

We are currently using a newish method of exercise based on 8/12/20. Basically you go flat out for 8 seconds, cruise for 12 seconds and keep repeating for 20 minutes. This can be on any cardio equipment - we use the exercise bike, rowing machine and cross trainer. The treadmill doesn't work for this as you can't adjust the speed quick enough.

Professor Steve Boutcher from the University of New South Wales is credited with creating this plan after research based on different programs. It was also featured on the program 'What's Good for You'.

In my case, the spare tyre is exaggerated by poor posture caused by a lack of core strength. We work on this by doing abs exercises such as crunchs and holding the plank position.

I've started to see some results after just 3 weeks, which is pretty encouraging. I also get a pretty good workout on the weekend from umpiring 2 games of under age aussie rules, which takes up 2.5 hours.

As I'm pretty new to all this gym stuff, the above is all pretty 'homespun' and I'm sure others could expand on the technicalities. But as I said, it's working for me. By the way, I'm 40 and also working in a desk bound job.

Hope this helps in some way. Best of luck.

Thanks guys.

Man my back is sore today. My wife tried to massage it last night. It felt alright but woke up so sore.

Anyway. I have been doing the treadmill thing since late last week. My back really feels it after but I persist as I think I need to do the cardio thing. My wife does like 30 minutes at 9.5kph an hour without raising a sweat. I used to do like 20 minutes on and off about a year ago but lost interest.
Currently I do 6 minutes at 8.5kph then I do 2 minutes at 10kph, then 2 minutes at 11kph and 2 minutes at 7kph. Man I nearly collapse after that. Sweat just pours off me.

I am starting to eat salads and vegies alot more.

So its is a start and I will keep this if none replies a blog on my progress for me.

I'd be interested in watching your progress. You might want to post a weekly update like Bluey does in his thread.

We did the 8/12 thing this morning on the ex bike after a light circuit. I was sweating buckets, but hell you feel good after it.
