Yes!!!!!!! The series favourite anime of all time! I couldn't wait for my weekly dose of Star Blazers in the early 80s. I had always hoped some day there would be a live action version.

Totally agree! Absolutely loved Star Blazers in my childhood. Even remember building the Yamato out of LEGO.

Can't wait to see this - and the Wave Motion Gun firing in all its glory.

You blokes must be a bit older than me. I was in the second batch of anime devotees who had their introduction with Robotech some years later. Neon Genesis Evangeleon was the one that eventually really pulled me in. I did once borrow a VHS tape of the first few eps of Star Blazers & just couldn't get into it. I found it a bit cheesy; not in a Clutch Cargo/Captain Fathom kind of way but the artwork was a bit crude & shoddy. Image

You have to understand the significance of the Yamato to the Japanese psyche. The WW2 battleship was the epitome of Japanese engineering and the ultimate symbol of naval power. There was a popular saying that Japan would never fall as long as Yamato was afloat. After the Allied invasion of Okinawa, Yamato was basically sent on a suicide mission. It carried more than a full load of ammunition but only enough fuel for a one way journey. The instructions were to beach itself on the island and keep fighting until destroyed. It was attacked by nearly 900 American aircraft and sunk with the loss of 2,000 of her 2,300 crew.

Now look at the plot of the Space Battleship story.

It was animated by hand in 1974.

Yep. Already read & watched a bunch of stuff about the Yamato. I'm a bit of a military history buff. I watched a few eps of the anime series, gave it a go & just didn't enjoy it. Sorry. If someone made a science fiction anime series where they made WWII German U-boats into space fighters I would not necessarily enjoy it just because I found their role in history interesting.

Robotech was a 1985 adaptation of the 1982 anime series The Super Dimension Fortress Macross (which was also hand drawn).

This should be sweet but a live action version of Battle of the Planets surely must follow!!

Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, thankyouverymuch! :)

There is a Gatchaman film in production but it's not live action.

I've never seen that show but heard of it. One of the reasons Carl Macek adapted Robotech for Harmony Gold is because he was appalled at the western adaptation of the original Battle of the Planets anime (like replacing all the violent scenes with a cute robot).

While you're getting nostalgic, there is also a new movie of Journey to the West. Those of an age who remember Star Blazers and Battle of the Planets will remember an over the top live action Japanese TV series of the same story. Interestingly, both the Japanese and dubbed English versions had the same theme
