Nicole Kidman slams Australia

Quote:
A HOMESICK Nicole Kidman has raised eyebrows after saying paparazzi made life in Australia unbearable, then walking out of a big movie promotion after only 10 minutes.
Kidman's diva turn - after she said she was treated better in her adopted home in Nashville - left film writers from across Europe bewildered.

A tired Kidman said she desperately missed her parents and other relatives when overseas, but hasn't missed the attention she gets from celebrity photographers in her home city.

"It makes certain cities impossible to live in. Like Sydney, it makes it impossible for us to live there," she said. "We certainly don't get that treatment in Tennessee."

Then, 10 minutes into the scheduled 30-minute interview with a handful of movie writers, a minder called for a last question and she walked out.

Kidman, husband Keith Urban and 17-month-old daughter Sunday Rose split their time between Tennessee and Australia.

"At the moment Keith's career requires him to be based in Nashville, because there isn't a huge career for him in terms of country music in Australia," she said, before her sudden exit.

"At the same time we're so connected to Australia, because our parents, my sister, our nieces and nephews, are all based there.

"So it really is a pull. I miss my mum and dad so much."

Kidman's run-ins with the paparazzi in Sydney are notorious. She once told a court of fearing for her life when she was pursued through the city by photographers in a high-speed car chase.

This year the star sold her home in Sydney's Darling Point for a reported $13.2 million, far less than the initial $20 million estimate.

Urban, opening a national tour in Melbourne last night, backed Kidman saying: "In Nashville, we just jump in a car and drive to wherever we want to go - to restaurants or movies. There is never any problem. Obviously, we don't have that in Sydney."

Kidman was speaking at a promotion of Chicago director Rob Marshall's much-anticipated Nine, which opens in Australia on January 21.

The film is her first since Baz Luhrmann's epic Australia, in which she came in for tough personal criticism.

She said her focus was now firmly on her family, and that she chose roles that suited her private life.

"My priority is very much my family. That doesn't waver. So if the film is shooting in some far away land then I can't go there and do that because it's not possible," she said.

"Were very much about keeping our family together. We don't like to be separated at all."
