When we had stats in the previous site incarnation, I personally didn't see much value in them, they were in a separate part of the site that wasn't visited much. Current system of post thanks works better because you can see them in areas where members spend most of their time (threads).

One thing that is annoying me is that karma is not represented well for long-term members (as generally newer posts are only thanked for so those who made lots of posts long time ago are having their stats skewed). But not sure what we could do about that without measuring their stats from a certain date onward, which would slow things down due to excessive database queries we would have to perform for every poster.

Personally i don't really care about the system but how about a numeric one. sharkboi would be #1, narly #2, ate #3, etc. Its simple and will encourage more posts due to competition.

I don't care about ratings either, and I'm certainly not #1, both Narly, Ate and others, have done many more posts than I have over the years, and deserve way more credit for all their work.

It's my understanding that the stats are from only 2009 when the site was reborn after the big crash, so they don't reflect the reality of all the work done by all the posters before then, compared to most I'm just a newbie around here.

Access to stats seemed to be good for that with my spamming getting me to almost 50,000 posts: Bluey got his 200,000 pics, narly had the most pics for least posts. If we go numeric i can pull my finger out & beat sharkie reposting personal pics in prolly 2 solid weeks to be No1 haha!

I see you're point, it would leave it open to abuse but it would be mainly for newer members. I had a quick count and combining our 200 latest members, they have a total post count of "8". Its just a way to encourage participation you could say

I wholly agree with you. I would love to see long-term members be better represented. It just comes down to logistics i guess. Does the benefit of acknowledging members properly outweigh the time and effort taken to find previous stats (before the change).

The current system or any revision should only be based on current events. Anyone is only as good as their last post and defunct non active members being rewarded is confusing /irrevevant! Also newer more active members should feel in the hunt rather than being compared to stuff half a decade and more ago.

I would tend to agree with you. Whatever encourages more activity from newer members should outweigh previous recognitions.

What have I started!

I just thought hitting 500 posts should get more recognition than Carl Carlson...and given in about 6 weeks i'll notch up 10 years of registration (probably one of only a select few that are still active)

The intention was just to broaden the criteria from just posts to things like certain 'karma' levels (ie. karma of 25 or above (min. 100 posts) etc.
