 Dealing with Spammers
Message Author

Postby HumphreyBBear » Mon May 23, 2011 5:48 pm

I have noticed, as I am sure the admins have, an increase in spammers hitting this board over the last couple of months.

May I suggest a policy of posts from *new* users to be vetted by admins until they reach a certain post count.
This sort of policy has been used in other forums successfully, and I have used it myself and found it not overly burdening to the moderators.

In fact, it seemed to reduce moderating time, as mods did not have to deal with the plethora of users reporting spam posts.

Is this something that the admin team have considered, and might you entertain the idea?
I, for one, find the posts of spammers in this forum quite annoying.

After today's flood of spam, I add my voice to support this. All new users should be moderated until they reach a certain post count.

I'm just wondering where the rest of the mods/admins are.......I log on before I go to work and when I get home from work, and always seem to be the one to clean all the crap up. Not bitching, just saying.

Maybe some more mods are needed? And possibly some dead wood removed?

Ummm Mr Walker you can check the log and see who is modding and I work longer hours now so am not here as often (only at night). I agree get rid of the dead wood and get more mods who are here more often.

Is it possible that old users who have been banned might be taking revenge by spamming?
Can this be determined in any way?

I think it's probably more due to BOT activity (resulting from the increase in advertisements), rather than banned users.

A banned user i'd imagine would go to far greater lengths to flood the board and even possibly try to 'break it' entirely, rather than just post the odd off topic reply in barely broken English.
