Site moved to a new machine - Dec 2009
Message Author

In another unfortunate turn of events, our hosting provider's server had completely failed yesterday morning, causing extensive downtime to sites hosted on that server. After contacting them and finding out that they would not be able get us up and running quickly enough (or that they could even recover our data), czblack and I decided to move on and find another hosting provider.

We have both been diligent enough to make offisite backups of the entire site regularly, making it possible to rebuild the entire site, including content, in a shortest time if required. So now, after 3 hours of work, we are up and running on another server, with a different provider. We have had dealing with these guys in the past through other channels and they have always been good and reliable, so we hope the site will now continue to run uninterrupted.

As is always the case with such a large move, there may be things that we have missed or misconfigured. Please feel free to post here if you notice anything unusual.

Yes, at such times it's good to have you on board, wolverine  The new machine should also resolve our prolonged mail sending issue, the speed looks fine too

As you said, there's not much we could have done with that situation, but I would like to apologize to all our members and visitors for the downtime  We'll try to do our best to minimize such events in the future...

Couldn't find the site for a couple of days, and suddenly realised I wasn't being redirected from the old auscelebs.net domain.

The site was down for "only" +- 17 hours actually, I have no other problems reported so far... I prolly didn't get what you wrote, but... never mind :)

Judging by what's in mail logs, it would seem that email delivery problem has also been sorted - the IP address we got on this new server is more reputable than the previous one. Last thing to check is that TPG customers can get to this new site as well. Anyone?

The entire database was restored without any errors so I'd say it wasn't in there. Is it really that important, can you not recreate it?

And we have no way of notifying them as on the previous server this time cause it's completely gone - former provider just let me know that they quit providing VPS services due to low-interest from the customer side (or rather massive compensation requests from them... now including us :)
