 Wireless Internet
Message Author

Postby djmenow » Tue Jan 14, 2014 9:46 pm

Ok I have never had wireless, always ADSL or ADSL 2 so a newbie to this.

I have a desktop and my daughter has a laptop. I need to go to wireless so we can both use the internet at the same time.

So I understand you need a router right? Also do you need the Wireless USB thingys for both systems?

What are the best routers for the best speeds and minimal dropouts for the mid $100 range? Are the wall plug things that increase the signals any good?

What wireless plans are the best in WA?

Nearly as fast & heaps cheaper would be a new adsl plan with free wifi.

Are you talking about replacing your ADSL connection with a wireless one (such as Telstra 3/4G modem/router), or adding WiFi to your house and continue to utilise your ADSL to connect to the Internet? Your questions are confusing and some imply a house connection (need for a router) but others a truly mobile connection (wireless plans).

See I am a noob to this. Realistically I need my daughters laptop to connect to wireless. My desktop is connected to a bigpond modem to the wall for ADSL2. I am set but if we both need to go wireless so she can do wireless on her laptop then thats what I would do. I just dont want any speeds affected on both.

You don't have to go wireless just because she does. All WiFi routers/modems these days have at least one LAN port (wired connection to your computer), and can accept connections from a considerable number of wireless devices at the same time.

All you need is a WiFi modem to replace your existing one. In the new modem you will need to enter your Telstra username/password, plus set up WiFi password/encryption etc. to ensure your WiFi is available only to those you want to give access to.

You can pick from any number of WiFi modems available out there, my personal preference is FritzBox though they are for users with advanced needs. As you are in Perth, I suggest you look at PLE website for one in your price range.

Ok I see, thanks for the advice. Ill check it out. It doesnt sound as bad as I thought. So if I am on adsl2 and she is on wireless at the same time through a new modem will speeds be affected?

Unless you're both torrenting at the same time, it's unlikely that you'll notice.

Just to clarify, you will both be using your ADSL2 to connect to the Internet, except that you will be connected via cable to the modem and she will connect via WiFi to the same modem. Once she leaves the house, she will not have Internet as she will be our of your house WiFi range. For those times when she is out and needs Internet, she could tether her laptop to her mobile phone's data plan (if she had one).

For $100, just get a new Modem\Router combo, much easier to set up.

So: Wall Outlet > DSL2+ Modem/Router > Wired to desktop, Wireless to Laptop, Wireless to mobile devices

Make sure you get a wireless N router at 300mbps, better range (~50m) and goes through walls
Setup is usually pretty easy, unless you want to 'tweak' it.
As you are not 'tech minded', focus on easy setup brands like Belkin or D-Link, I have a Billion which are good but not easy to set up.

One the back of the modem, get a 4 port router (for home they are either 1 or 4).
Your desktop will be on 1, but you may need the second occasionally. I have a printer in port 2, so I can print wirelessly from any device on the network.
For example, I have a 4 port modem router, connected to it wirelessly are 2 laptops, 2 mobiles, a tablet and a TV. Wired are a desktop and a colour laser MFC printer. All running at the same time, no issues. Multiple devices browsing won't cause network lag, unless one is downloading torrents or other traffic hungry data.

Also, tell the daughter to do all app downloads and updates at home to save draining the mobile data limit

Oh, and for broadband, check http://www.broadbandchoice.com.au

Check available providers and quality of service with http://www.adsl2exchanges.com.au
This will tell you providers in your area, and the likely speed you will encounter.

Most popular providers are Internode, TPG and of course Telstra.
