Been playing with vlc for capping . Problem is it won't play all vids . I copy the programs that I cap from my Topfield STB to usb stick , toppy records and copies as .mpg file's Power DVD plays everything , Vlc won't & for some strange reason it won't play anything I record from Chanel 10. I'm confuddled

I use Media Player Classic Home Cinema for capping, it has played every file type I've thrown at it.
I've tested VLC for capping but don't like the interlaced look of the caps, don't have that problem with MPC

I can't come to grips with MPC . I can't work out what key to hit for captures or where the capture ends up (folder).

How I do it...

I play the file, when I see a possible cap I pause play with the space bar, then I advance one frame at a time with the right cursor key to decide what frames to cap.

When I see a frame I want to cap I hold down the ALT key and press the i key, then the save as dialog box comes up, and gives you the options for where to save it, and what format to save it in, I always use BMP, which is converted to JPG by FastStone Photo Resizer at the end of it's processing work.

Then while the clip is still paused, I keep advancing frame by frame for more caps of the scene that I may want to get, also I can cap every frame of an upskirt (for example) to use them for making a GIF.

If you open up MPC and choose view/options in the first window on the right is the option to store your settings to an ini file, this way all your saving directory and file format choices for capping will be saved.

Download FFDShow.

I contains many codecs, allows you to clean up images, and the "Grab" feature will cap all frames by playing a section of the video .
I like to use MPC, (when you have FFDShow installed) as it also allows you to step through a scene frame by frame by hitting the right arrow key. Very handy if you want to select a particular frame.
You can also configure "keybinds" for certain commands.

One thing I note, however, is that the "single frame" grab does not work, but that is a minor problem.

Ta for that , but too slow and complicated for me . VLC & PDVD lets me cap on the run with a mouse click or one key press and goes straight to a folder I nominate as a jpg. .

I've used programs to cap on the fly like that too, but I find that in the split second before hitting the key it's moved on ever so slightly, and I end up with some caps where they have moved or are blinking or the shot has changed to someone else or something.

I like my frame by frame advance so I can choose the exact image I want, and for making GIFs
