Rest prescribed for Dokic
MELBOURNE, Australia -- Doctors have diagnosed a "mystery" ailment that has plagued Jelena Dokic since the French Open as mononucleosis and told the former Australian No. 1 to rest for two weeks.

Dokic had blood tests after suffering a dizzy spell in her first round defeat by Germany's Tatjana Malek at Wimbledon.

The results that came back earlier this week showed she had mononucleosis, a viral ailment whose symptoms include fever, fatigue and swollen glands, Tennis Australia said in a statement on Friday.

"Doctors have told her to do nothing but rest for a fortnight," the statement said.

After a three-year layoff, Dokic revived her tennis career by making the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in January, but has since struggled, and was forced to withdraw from the French Open with a back injury while leading her second-round match against Elena Dementieva.

The world No. 76 said she was disappointed she would miss a couple of tour events, but also relieved to know what was wrong.

"This only makes me more determined to get everything right and work even harder as soon as I can get back on court, which will hopefully be in time for a good solid hard court lead up to the U.S. Open," she said.

Dokic hopes experience helps at US Open
IF JELENA Dokic is aware it would have been counterproductive to rush her return to tournament play after a draining bout of mononucleosis, then the Australian's inability to play a lead-up event before this month's US Open has also severely compromised her preparation for the year's final grand slam.

Dokic's season has been one of extremes. The inspired high of her run to the Australian Open quarter-finals has been followed by a series of health problems that have lingered to the extent the 26-year-old will arrive at Flushing Meadows without having played competitively since Wimbledon in June.

She had intended to try to resume in New Haven next week, but those plans have been shelved as the world No. 83 continues to train at the IMG Bollettieri Academy in Florida.

The most recent of Dokic's 20 matches this year was a three-set fadeout against German qualifier Tatjana Malek in the first round at the All England Club.

''We decided collectively for her to rest and make sure this mono is totally out of her system before she resumes on the tour, otherwise it would be a counterproductive restart,'' her agent Lawrence Frankopan said.

''She is a very experienced player and, sadly, she knows a lack of preparation for the Open is not ideal, but she has been practising great and hopefully this will help her to adjust in time. She is 100 per cent and is greatly looking forward to resuming on the tour … hopefully the worst is behind her.''

Since her surge to the last eight at Melbourne Park as a 187th-ranked wildcard Dokic has won just two matches at WTA level, the last at the French Open in May. Dokic has endured a variety of ailments including a back injury and what was initially thought to be sports fatigue syndrome but later identified as the glandular fever-like mononucleosis.

Sam Stosur, Lleyton Hewitt, Victorian wildcards Chris Guccione and Olivia Rogowska and Dokic remain the only five Australians guaranteed singles starts in New York from Monday week. In-form veteran Peter Luczak, ranked 79th, heads the list of qualifying hopefuls.
