The difference as I see it is people who call them rangas do so soley because of the similar hair colour, The ones that call the other individuals apes or monkeys are doing it to belittle and make them appear inferior, hence racist |

Ranga is short for 'oRANGutan'. It's exactly the same thing. If Goodes and Symonds were being called an ape or a monkey merely because of their hair colour it would be the same thing but I do not think that is why people were saying it. The issue's more about the why, rather than the what. Inferring that they are somehow less evolved. That's the way I've always understood it too. Not that it's okay (I suppose) to make fun of a person's hair colour but it's still a long way for making fun of someone's race. Probably because there's not the history of segregation, inequality and oppression based on different hair types. Maybe the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 will include hair colour one day but unlikely considering most blondes and redheads aren't real blondes and redheads and, because you can buy any hair colour you want at a supermarket for under $20, there are some who change their hair colour almost as often as their undercrackers. |
