Glenn then spent 24 years as a Democrat from Ohio in the Senate and briefly made a run for president in 1984. He returned to space in 1998, at age 77, aboard space shuttle Discovery.

He was the last survivor of the original Mercury 7 astronauts.

Emmy-winning actress Mary Tyler Moore, who brightened American television screens as the perky suburban housewife on "The Dick Van Dyke Show" and then as a fledgling feminist on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show," died on Wednesday at the age of 80, a representative said.

Joost van der Westhuizen, the South African Rugby World Cup winner, has died aged 45. The former scrum-half had been living with motor neurone disease since 2011 and was admitted to a Johannesburg hospital on Saturday morning.

Richard Hatch, Battlestar Galactica's original Apollo, dies at 71

The actor Richard Hatch, best known for playing Captain Apollo in the original Battlestar Galactica film and TV series, has died aged 71.

After an early role on All My Children in 1971, Hatch worked steadily as an actor, appearing in Dynasty, The Love Boat, Santa Barbara and Baywatch. He also appeared as Tom Zarek in the rebooted Battlestar Galactica TV series from 2004 to 2009.

Former IT girl, and Prince Charles’ goddaughter, Tara Palmer-Tomkinson has died aged 45.
The Sun reports that the socialite had been battling a brain tumour since last January, and passed away at her London home earlier today. Her cause of death has not yet been revealed.
